As you can gather from the title, Flora develops a bond with an energetic squirrel named Ulysses. She also befriends William, who opens up to her about some emotional difficulties and supports her in her quest to save Ulysses. Rather than focusing on a romantic element — Flora is only 10 years old, after all! — the movie illustrates the fact that love can be platonic.

When we first meet Flora, her parents are separated. Her dad, in particular, appears to be dealing with feelings of depression after his comic book deal doesn't work out. It might be a good time to discuss with kids that sometimes parents don't have everything figured out. While it's not a child's job to emotionally support their parent, Flora & Ulysses underscores the importance of developing empathy in children.
