Does a Good Nappy Help With Nappy Rash?

How Does a High-Quality Nappy Help With Nappy Rash? Here's the Deal

We teamed up with Pampers to highlight the myths and facts surrounding your new baby's nappy rash and share how Pampers is always there to help parents prevent nappy rashes with safe and high-quality nappies.

In those first few years of your baby's life, there are few things you will rely on more than a good nappy. Sure, it's not as glitzy as a fancy bassinet or as Instagrammable as a cute outfit, but the difference between a happy baby and an uncomfortable baby usually comes down to the nappy they are wearing. That's why as new parents you should research which nappy is best at protecting delicate newborn skin. Pampers New Baby nappies are the only nappies approved by the British Skin Foundation, a reputable UK charity that has spent 25 years supporting research into a variety of skin conditions, so you know you can depend on them to keep your baby's delicate skin protected. We asked Midwife Marley to help dispel a few more myths surrounding nappies and nappy rashes. Read on to reveal the truth behind your baby's nappy rash.

If you're a new mum or dad struggling with a newborn's nappy rash, don't worry! It's common amongst babies and can be easily identified and treated. According to Midwife Marley, any part of the skin around the bottom, groin, and genital area can be affected, usually by the appearance of sore-looking skin. It can look red and may peel and have painful spots and blisters. She said that if you notice your baby has nappy rash, first clean the area gently with water and a cotton wool or water-based wipes, such as Pampers Aqua Pure wipes made with 99 percent water. Be sure to get into all of the creases where urine and poo might be hiding and bear in mind that it may be quite uncomfortable for your baby, so take your time. Allow the area to dry for a couple of minutes before applying a nappy rash treatment.

While it's commonly believed that nappy rash is caused simply by leaving a baby in a wet or dirty nappy for too long, Marley said there are many other reasons it may occur, including an ill-fitting nappy. She explained that an ill-fitting nappy can rub and cause nappy rash, as can ones that do not effectively absorb urine and poo. And if a nappy is too big, urine can leak out and settle on other areas of skin. She suggested using a high-quality nappy, that is designed to keep sensitive newborn skin dry and healthy, such as Pampers New Baby. Pampers New Baby nappies are designed with a DermaComfort Layer that pulls wetness away from the skin to prevent irritation. They also come with a wetness indicator to let you know when it might be time for a change and Flexi-Side wings and double leg cuffs that gently adapt to your baby's shape to maximise comfort — not too tight, not too loose.

While nappy rashes are very common, they can also be prevented by changing regularly. Marley said small babies may require changing up to 12 times per day! Some other tips you can follow to avoid nappy rashes are to clean the area fully and allow it to dry for as long as possible before replacing the nappy, bathe your baby daily, and avoid using harsh soaps, lotions, and bubbles. When you have bathed your baby, dry them gently, patting rather than vigorously rubbing.

Combine those insights with a good nappy to help avoid uncomfy nappy rash on your new baby's bum while they're in nappies.
