Hilary Duff on Parenting While Social Distancing: "It's Exhausting. It's So Exhausting"

For Hilary Duff, parenting her two children Luca, 8 and Banks, 1, while social distancing has been a roller coaster. Like many parents right now, the 32-year-old mother of two has been oscillating between feeling grateful, and well, downright tired. She opened up about what the last few weeks have been like for her family during an interview with Cosmopolitan, and honestly, we feel seen.

"It's exhausting. It's so exhausting. You know, I have my days where I'm like, 'Oh, I moved mountains and I deserve a medal.' And then there are other days where I'm like, 'How can I complain?' We're all healthy and we have a backyard and we have a pool," she said. "You know, it's hard. I know a lot of people are getting judgments for complaining. You know, people that have what they need. I feel extremely appreciative. And also everyone — no matter who you are — is experiencing loss on some level. Luckily, that's not loss of life [for us], but life changes and that's going to affect anyone. And that's okay to honour your feelings."

Like any parent who is doing their best to keep their kiddos entertained, Hilary admits some days are better than others. "Honestly, most days are good. I've had like three really hard days where I feel really low and I feel so burnt and so tired of my kids, you know? Kids are annoying, I'm not going to lie," she said. "When I get in bed every single night and we're like, 'Oh my God, do we hate our kids or what?' And then we wake up and the next day's a new day and we're like, 'We're so freaking grateful for our kids.' They're funny and they make us laugh and they also frustrate the hell out of us."

"There's no one who feels like, 'It's perfect.' It's not perfect."

Despite the challenges, Hilary feels incredibly blessed to be with her family and is trying to take some time to live in the moment.

"Everybody's feeling [the stress.] There's no one who feels like, 'It's perfect.' It's not perfect. We have no help," she explained. "We're cleaning everything that comes in the house. Explaining to our children what's going on without creating anxiety is a whole other navigation. But the sun is shining in California and I'm grateful for that. This has also been like a really big time to reflect and just be a little bit more still. We have each other and that's enough right now."
