"I Lost Any Filter": Jenny Slate Retells the Story of Giving Birth to Her Daughter During a Pandemic

Congratulations are in order for new parents Jenny Slate and Ben Shattuck! On Feb. 3, Jenny sat down for a virtual chat with Jimmy Kimmel to announce that she'd given birth to her first child, a baby girl. "We should have thought more about giving her something to commemorate this distinct time in our universe," Jenny joked before revealing that her daughter's name is Ida, inspired by her Jewish heritage. After sharing her initial excitement over being a new mom, Jenny also got into the finer details of what it was like to give birth during a pandemic. "It's a really major time to have a baby right now," she said. "It's like, 'Wow, we're really doing this.' We weren't sure how it was going to go."

"It was like a totally extreme experience during which I lost any filter that I might have already had left."

While the doctors celebrated the beautiful moment, Jenny had slightly more pressing concerns on her mind immediately after giving birth. "It was like a totally extreme experience during which I lost any filter that I might have already had left," she said. "I was just like: 'Did my vagina rip in half?! Does anyone know?! Is it like one vagina still or is it not?!'" Jenny jokingly added that she was grateful to be wearing a mask in the delivery room to hide any memorable faces she was making from her fiancé.

Jenny first revealed she was pregnant during an interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Dec. 10. She and her fiancé Ben Shattuck, an art curator, first went public with their relationship during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival in Jan. 2019 and announced their engagement in Sept. 2019. "He took me to France and made a picnic and made me feel happy and free and then he asked me to marry him and i screamed YES," Jenny captioned her Instagram post. "I love you @benshattuck_art, you are the kindest and brightest and I am so grateful and here we go and keep going." Cheers, Jenny, Ben, and baby Ida!
