14/04/2021 - 08:01 PM

We're suckers for an engageing sitcom, and Jamie Foxx [1]'s latest project with Netflix, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!, will likely catch your teen's eye. Chock-full of funny one-liners, the first season of this comedy series [2] is a modern take on family-centreed classics like Family Matters and The Bernie Mac Show.

Rated TV-14, it explores what happens when a single dad named Brian Dixon (Foxx) has his daughter, Sasha (Kyla-Drew), move in with him after her mother passes away. Between a truly hilarious cast of characters — Sasha's grandfather (David Alan Grier) had us howling with laughter — the family navigate a slew of problems big and small while living under one roof.

While parents could certainly get away with allowing kids under the age of 14 to watch this show, there are a few things they should know before pressing play when it begins streaming on April 14. Read ahead to get a peek!

Some characters briefly mention drug use.

Throughout the first season, there are a few brief mentions of marijuana use. At one point, we see Sasha's grandfather smoking in the kitchen, noting that it's for medicinal purposes. Although marijuana is now legal in several states, it might be worth reminding teens about the negative health consequences of smoking.

There are some brief sexual innuendos.

In true sitcom fashion, you never see any sexual activity on screen, but there are many comedic references to it. From Brian's employee coming onto him to a funny quip about deleting one's search history, there are plenty of innuendos to go around.

The show discusses some heavy parenting topics.

Viewers get a look at some of the problems that families go through. From Sasha questioning whether or not she believes in God after her mother dies to the privacy concerns of tracking your kids on an app, there are loads of relatable conversations that will resonate with teens. Moreover, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! addresses systematic racism in a transparent manner that might cause older children to ask relevant follow-up questions even after they stop watching.
