Netflix's Hubie Halloween Is the Absurd Flick That Teens Need Right Now — Here's Why

07/10/2020 - 10:28 PM

If you're anything like us, we're usually suckers for Adam Sandler [1] movies. After all, there's no time like 2020 for some ridiculous, light-hearted humour. Thankfully the comedian's most recent film, Hubie Halloween [2], is already available to stream on Netflix and chock-full of big-name talent like Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Rob Schneider, Maya Rudolph, and Steve Buscemi just to name a few.

While parents might want to queue up Sandler's latest flick to channel the nostalgic feelings they experienced while watching Big Daddy for the first time, we have a feeling that teens will instantly gravitate to Hubie Halloween, too. Full of slapstick humour and easy-to-quote jokes, this movie will surely become a favourite of big kids who love to laugh.

Rated PG-13, Hubie Halloween appropriately centres on a man named Hubie who lives in Salem. Frequently mocked by other Salem residents, Hubie's courage is put to the test when it becomes up to him to save his hometown from a seriously spooky presence.

Read ahead to learn why Hubie Halloween — which is every bit absurd as it is stacked with star power — will be on your tween or teen's must-watch list [3] and what parents should be aware of before they press play!

There are a lot of bullying scenes.

From the very beginning it becomes clear that Hubie is often a target of ridicule. Whether he's getting made fun of at work or chased down by local troublemakers while riding his bike, there's no shortage of characters taking their mockery way too far.

Yes, it's instantly clear that Hubie is different. He even talks with a lisp à la Carl Spackler from Caddyshack, but that obviously doesn't give others the licence to make fun of him. It may be worth reminding your kiddos in a larger conversation that it's never kind to tease people just because they do things differently than you.

It’s chock-full of humour your teens will love.

Like many Adam Sandler [4] movies that have come before, Hubie Halloween [5] has a ton of wise cracks, instances of slapstick comedy, and a handful of sexual innuendos for good measure. While there is some light cursing — think along the lines of calling someone a dumbass — it's nothing a teenager can't handle. Additionally, a character dressed as a nun mentions that she's asexual, but feeling "horny," so be prepared to field a question or two about what that means. If you've seen any of Sandler's past work, then you'll know exactly what your children are in for. As Billy Madison would say, it's par for the course.

Hubie Halloween gives a nod to an unlikely hero.

There's nothing we love more than seeing the underdog come out on top. And while Hubie certainly has his quirks, he has a kind heart — and a great relationship with his mother! — which makes him hard not to love. At its crux, Hubie Halloween [7] is a light-hearted comedy that illustrates what people can achieve with a little bit of passion and determination.

It fills a void for tweens and teens looking to celebrate Halloween.

If you really think about it, there aren't too many Halloween [8] movies for tweens and teens. While we're huge fans of Disney's Halloweentown [9] and Hocus Pocus [10], you can only watch them so many times before craving something new.

Additionally, some teens aren't quite ready to watch straight-up horror flicks like The Nightmare on Elm Street, so Hubie's Halloween [11] offers a fun alternative for kids who are straddled between childhood and becoming a full-fledged adult.

It's also worth keeping in mind that while this flick might not be something you'd typically allow your big kids to queue up, the Halloween activities to choose from [12] are limited this year, especially with trick-or-treating off the table [13]. Our opinion? Make your teen some popcorn and press play!
