David Pastrnak, a professional hockey player for the Boston Bruins, made the devastating announcement on Monday that his newborn son has died.

In an Instagram post, the NHL athlete revealed that his 6-day-old child, Viggo Rohl Pastrnak, died on Wednesday, June 23, after he and girlfriend Rebecca Rohlsson welcomed him the previous Thursday, June 17.

"We have an Angel watching over us and we call him SON," Pastrnak wrote alongside a black-and-white photo of his baby's feet. "You will be loved forever."

He added: "Please respect our privacy as we are going through these heartbreaking times."

Pastrnak and Rohlsson had announced that they were expected a baby, the couple's first, back in January.

His teammates and the Bruins organisation have come out to share their support of Pastrnak's family.

"We are heartbroken by the passing of David and Rebecca's son, Viggo," his teammates said in a statement on Monday. "David and Rebecca are a part of our family and we share in their loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this very difficult time."
