An Animated Short Sharing Olaf’s Origin Story Is Coming to Disney+ on Friday!

19/10/2020 - 06:41 PM

In the beginning of Frozen, we all fall in love with the whimsy that seems to come with Elsa's powers when she creates a snowman and names him Olaf, pronouncing that he likes warm hugs. Of course, Olaf's story doesn't end there, as we see him become a part of the crew through the rest of the movie and in Frozen II, but where does his story really originate, aside from in the grand ballroom of Elsa and Anna's palace? Never fear, Walt Disney Animation Studio is cluing us in with its new short film, Once Upon a Snowman, which shares Olaf's previously untold origin story from the time Elsa re-creates him while she's — ahem — "letting it all go" to when Anna and Kristoff meet him in the woods, terrified to explain to him what would happen to a snowman in summer.

"This is an idea that started to form when I was an animator on the first Frozen," director Trent Correy said in a press release. "Dan Abraham and I are so grateful and excited to have had the opportunity to direct this short, working with our incredible colleagues at Walt Disney Animation Studios." Dan added: "Josh Gad gives one of the great animated voice performances as Olaf through the Frozen films. To have the opportunity to work with him in the recording booth was such a privilege and career highlight."

Catch Once Upon a Snowman on Disney+ when it begins streaming on Oct. 23!
