The Owl House creator Dana Terrace fought for representation on her animated series, and now she's making Disney Channel history. On Aug. 9, Dana shared a series of tweets explaining how she brought the network's first bisexual lead character to screens, and her feelings can be summed up in two simple words: "Representation matters!"
Luz Noceda is The Owl House's 14-year-old Dominican-American protagonist, on a quest to become a witch. In recent episodes it's revealed that Luz is attracted to both boys and girls. "In dev I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast," Dana explained on Twitter. "When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could NOT represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel."
Dana wouldn't let the the initial "nos" stop her, especially since her desire for diversity came from a personal place. "I'm bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership," she wrote. "Representation matters! Always fight to make what YOU want to see!"
Luz joins the small, but growing, number of LGBTQ+ characters created by Disney. A Disney+ short recently illustrated a beautiful coming-out story [1], Lena Waithe voiced Pixar's first openly gay character in Onward, and last year, a Disney Channel character on Andi Mack had inspiring, open conversations with friends about his sexuality [2]. There's still plenty of progress to be made, but we're here for the steps towards more representation!
