Losing a pet can bring on such deep grief, no matter how long or short of a time you were showered with their unconditional love. To cope with the death of her 7-year-old Golden retriever, Charlie, Sallie Gregory Hammett decided to write him an obituary that celebrated his life, all the things he loved, and all he brought to his family.

"I wrote my dog an obituary because of course I did. He was the best boy," Sallie wrote in a Sept. 22 tweet, which also shared a photo of Charlie's full newspaper obituary.

In the obituary, Sallie shared that Charlie, who fought a five-month battle against lymphoma, "crossed the rainbow bridge Sunday, September 13 peacefully in the arms of his mom," where he joined his fur sisters, Gracie and Scout, "who welcomed him cheerfully on the other side." Sallie spoke of Charlie's favourite activities and the things he loved, such as swimming, snoozing, car rides, sticks, and bananas.

But most of all, he loved his mama. "He was always there to greet her with some kisses and a firm grip on her arm. He was her constant companion. There through heartache, moves, grief, and joy. He was good at a lot of things, but he was best at unconditional love," Sallie wrote, adding that Charlie spent his last happy days playing on the beach.

"We will think of him every time we open the peanut butter. We will miss him every time we see a sock on the floor or pass a stick on a walk. We will carry him with us everywhere. He will be forever missed and forever remembered, but he left behind his fierce love, which never wavered."

Sallie ends her beautiful obituary asking people that in lieu of flowers they give their pups "some extra love in honour of Charlie."
