Bundle Up and Set Sail to These Cold-Weather Cruise Destinations

05/09/2018 - 09:03 PM

When you think about cruising [1], you might instinctively envision a week of sunbathing, sandy beaches [2], and rum cocktails (and, hey, there is nothing wrong with that!). But this cruise season, we challenge you to think beyond the palm trees and consider bundling up for a cold-weather adventure on the high seas. From the snow-capped mountains of Alaska to Scandinavia's famous fjords to penguin sightings, these polar getaways are sure to take your breath away. Gather your best Winter gear, and get ready to set sail!

Antarctica

For snowbirds, a trip to the coldest continent on the planet is the ultimate getaway. Many cruise lines invite you to travel the very ends of the earth, where you'll spot penguins, seals, whales, and so much more. The intrepid traveller can even show off their cold-weather chops with a frosty polar bear plunge into the icy seas. Although not technically a country of its own, the continent does offer visitors souvenir stamps in their passports. And yes, it is a picture of a penguin, which pretty much makes it the coolest passport stamp ever.

The Arctic Circle

Climb aboard an icebreaker, and explore the wondrous facets of the Arctic Circle, from staggering fjords to sparkling glaciers. You can drink in the Midnight Sun, journey along early paths of the ancient Vikings, and even catch a glimpse the Northern Lights [3]. Royal Caribbean, Quark Expeditions, Viking Ocean Cruises, and other cruise liners offer multiday adventures into this dreamy region. Just be sure to pack your puffiest Winter coat.

The Northwest Passage

The Northwest Passage — the route that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago — offers cruisers a spectacular journey through natural icy wonders. Retrace the steps of many early explorers, and cross into the Arctic Circle on this iconic route, where you'll visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, charming fishing villages, geological wonders, and more. It's a journey into one of the most remote areas in the world, where the wilderness is untamed and the sights are truly breathtaking. Also, if wildlife excites you, get ready for some epic polar bear sighting.

Alaska

Although tropical locales like Florida tend to get a lot of the glory, America's 49th state has been an incredibly popular cruise destination for years — and for good reason. The vast landscape is teeming with awe-inspiring imagery, like powdered peaks, eagles soaring overhead, and 30-ton whales gliding through the waters. From luxury liners to smaller, more intimate boats, there is a variety of options for prime Alaska exploration.

Scandinavia

The Norwegian fjords are truly a sight to behold, but aboard a cruise around Scandinavia, they are just the tip of the iceberg (pun totally intended) of the enchanting sights you'll see. Magnificent waterfalls, glaciers, geysers, and mountains await. Many liners also take you on a tour of historic medieval architecture, and — depending on the length — over to Northern Russia.
