20 Amazing European Experiences to Have While You're in Your 20s

01/01/2019 - 04:40 PM

When I was just a sprightly 12-year-old, I made a list: a list of every wild, fulfilling experience I hoped to have in my lifetime. It included everything from "Own all 10 seasons of Friends" (which I successfully checked off in the pre-Netflix era) to "Climb Mount Vesuvius and visit Pompeii" (still waiting on that one). The list — aptly dubbed "Things I Want to Do" — has grown and evolved with time, but much of its content is centred on having crazy European adventures [1] — adventures best completed in your 20s [2], I'd say (I mean, if not now, when?).

If you, too, have been craving a bit of European excitement and are wondering where to start, you've come to the right place. Here's a look at 20 incredible experiences to have across the continent while you're in your 20s — experiences you should absolutely add to your own list of "Things I Want to Do."

Bathe in Budapest

The Hungarian capital has no shortage of wonders — from gorgeous bridges to the breathtaking Buda Castle — but Budapest may be best known for its thermal baths. The city's home to more than 125 thermal baths [3], ranging from the world-famous Szechenyi Baths to the luxurious Gellert Baths [4], all wonderful places to relax on your next Euro trip.

Stroll Along the Seine

What would a European bucket list be without Paris [5]? Nothing, the answer is nothing. At some point in your own roaring 20s, be sure to visit the French capital and stroll along the River Seine, admiring everything from the iconic Eiffel Tower to the sparkling dome of Les Invalides [6] along the way.

Catch the Northern Lights in Iceland

Though you can spot the aurora borealis [7] from a number of countries, there's something especially magical about watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky in Iceland.

If you really want to treat yourself, book a stay at the Ion Adventure Hotel [8] and enjoy a few libations at its Northern Lights bar as well. Just remember: the lights are most easily spotted from late November to February [9], so be sure to book your stay during these Winter months.

Venture to Krakow

A city rich in culture, colour, and cheap beer, Krakow [10], Poland, is the perfect destination for any and all travellers in their 20s. Explore the (very literally) salty underground world of Wieliczka Salt Mine [11] by day and fill up on pierogi in the evenings — I hear Gospoda Koko [12]'s got some of the best in town.

Celebrate Midsummer's Day in Sweden

Though Sweden falls at the more expensive end of the holiday spectrum, its Midsummer's Day [13] celebration is one you won't want to miss.

Each year on Midsummer's Eve (in this case, June 23, 2018 [14]), cities across Sweden embrace the Summer solstice by donning flower crowns (or krans, traditionally associated with good health), hosting maypole dances, and even burning bonfires here and there. It's a magical occasion and arguably a better excuse to sport floral headwear than Coachella [15].

Check Out the Giant's Causeway in Belfast

The Giant's Causeway is, quite literally, the stuff of legends. Fans of Gaelic mythology will claim these stacks of basalt columns are the work of a giant named Fionn mac Cumhaill, while Game of Thrones fans will feel they've been transported to the land of Westeros once they lay their eyes on this natural phenomenon. Either way, this spot along the Northern Irish coast is certainly worth a visit.

Pick Lavender in Provence

I'm sorry, but is there anything more serene than looking at (and soaking up the fragrance of) seemingly endless lavender fields? Nope? I completely agree. And there's absolutely no better place to do that than in the French region of Provence [16].

Stretched along the country's southern tip, Provence is home to a variety of towns — from Aix-en-Provence to Arles — as well as a variety of stunning lavender fields. It's a perfect trip to take during the lazy, hazy days of Summer, from late June through early August (lavender's peak season).

Explore the Greek Island of Rhodes

The former home of Colossus of Rhodes [17] — one of the seven wonders of the ancient world — Rhodes seems to have vanished from the list of travel destinations just as the colossal statue of Helios has vanished from its island. But make no mistake: though sister islands like Santorini and Mykonos are the alleged places to be, Rhodes offers the same sweeping sea views, taste of grappa, and sense of Grecian adventure (just with way fewer tourist traps).

Hike Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh

Named for the legendary king (you know, the one who pulled the sword from the stone?), Arthur's Seat is a dormant volcano sitting atop the city of Edinburgh [18]. While the Scottish capital has plenty to offer any traveller in their 20s — from charming castles to "the birthplace of Harry Potter [19]" — hiking Arthur's Seat is among the loveliest, most exhausting ways to spend your afternoon in this city. If not for the view from the top, than for the sense of sheer accomplishment.

Drink Up at Oktoberfest in Munich

Of course Oktoberfest [20] makes the list of must-have European adventures. For fans of pretzels, pints, and lederhosen (or dirndls [21], as the ladies wear), Oktoberfest [22] is a wild, hops-filled party in Munich you must attend. It's set to run from Sept. 22 through to Oct. 7 this year, so mark your calendars and prepare for a weekend festivities (and, obviously, a whole lot of beer).

Wander Through the Tiled Streets of Lisbon

Lisbon [23] feels a bit like Barcelona's hip younger sister — it's colourful, sun-soaked, and full of delicious tapas, but with a much more relaxed atmosphere (and cheaper hotel rates, at that). That said, the Portuguese capital's got no shortage of parties or sangria, for those looking for a more energetic holiday.

Relax on the Estonian Island of Saaremaa

A hidden gem floating in the Baltic Sea, the Estonian island of Saaremaa [24] (which literally means "island land") is known for its pine-filled forests, fresh sea air, and even its top-notch vodka. Essentially the polar opposite of Ibiza, Saaremaa offers its visitors a look at age-old windmills, meteorite crater fields begging to be explored, and a literal and figurative breath of fresh air.

Admire the Tulips in Amsterdam

Amsterdam [25]'s a city that everyone should visit at one point or another with its incredible museum experiences (from the Anne Frank House [26] to the Vincent van Gogh Museum [27]), vibrant coffeeshops, and an array of houseboats bobbing along its canals. . .

Wondering when to visit the ever-delightful Dutch capital? Absolutely book your trip during tulip season [28], running from late March through to early May. Bonus points if you bundle your tulip-spotting holiday with King's Day [29] (April 27), an orange-covered celebration commemorating the birth of King Willem-Alexander.

Indulge in Venetian Gelato

Speaking of canals, Venice [30] is yet another stunning city that deserves a spot on your travel list. Beyond its decadent pasta and gelato (which is to die for, by the way), the Floating City is renowned for its flamboyant architecture, sigh-worthy bridges [31], and lovable stripes-sporting gondoliers [32] . . .

Sadly, Venice may not even exist 20 years from now (due to rising sea levels), so be sure to visit this painfully romantic Italian town as soon as possible in your 20s — before it sinks into the ocean.

Dance Your Way Through Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg

Salzburg is one of the loveliest cities Austria has to offer, regardless of your taste in film, but it's an absolute must visit for lovers of The Sound of Music [33]. Fans of the musical will recognise Salzburg's Mirabell Castle and Gardens for their cameo during "Do-Re-Mi," while the less cinematically inclined will appreciate the gardens' vivid florals and sprawling greenery.

(Oh, and Salzburg's apple strudel [34] will quickly become one of your "favourite things.")

Grab a Pint at The Temple Bar in Dublin

The Temple Bar [35] in Dublin is arguably the greatest spot in the world to grab a pint of Guinness. The historic pub and its surrounding area are perpetually lively, vibrant, and perfect for grabbing a drink, no matter the time of day. Is it a touristy destination? Absolutely. But it's also a fabulous time for 20-something travellers.

Run With the Bulls

The Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain [36] (not for the faint of heart), is one experience every thrill-seeker should aim to check off his or her bucket list.

Each July, during the Feast of San Fermín [37], tourists and locals alike take to the streets of the old town and attempt to outrun a literal pack of bulls (though the event has seen its fair share of casualties and injuries). If being chased through the streets isn't your style, though, you can cheer runners on from the sidelines and partake in the sangria-fuelled festivities that follow.

Visit Sedlec Ossuary in Prague

Another adventure not designed for the faint-hearted, the Czech Republic's Sedlec Ossuary [38] is a stunning (albeit terrifying) Catholic chapel sitting just outside of Prague [39], and decorated almost entirely with human bones. Because nothing says classy interior design quite like human remains, don't you think?

Solve a Mystery at Evans & Peel in London

London may be known for one particularly discerning detective (ahem, Sherlock Holmes), but Evans & Peel Detective Agency [40] is giving Sherlock a run for his money — and his bartending skills.

The Prohibition Era detective's office (and secret bar) is conspicuously located in Earl's Court, offering its guests a bit of help solving mysteries and a whole lot of delicious cocktails. Be sure to book an appointment in advance and come with a case ready to be solved.

Climb Mount Vesuvius Off the Coast of Naples

You didn't think I'd forgotten about good old Mount Vesuvius [41], did you? Of course not.

Last but certainly not least, every adventurous traveller should aim to climb the (currently dormant) volcano and admire Italy's Amalfi Coast from its peak.

And if the thrill and workout of the hike aren't worth it, just do it for 12-year-old me?
