Despite the many things currently going on the world [1] — in particular the US — there are still many towns where its residents (for the most part) feel content, happy, and heard. Nerdwallet just released their Happiest Cities in America list for 2019 [2], and we have a feeling that some of these spots may surprise you. Whether you live in one of these cities or want to plan a visit (who wouldn't want to go to a happy town?!), they've all excelled in a few big categories for happiness, including emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment. From sunny California towns [3] to Arizona's desert, keep reading to see all 20 of the country's happiest cities.
Plano, Texas
Unless you've been here, we'd wager you had no idea Plano, Texas — which is about 20 miles north of Dallas — was known for being such a happy place. It boasts that famous small-town Texas spirit and is speckled with 84 beautiful parks, making it easy to get outside and appreciate your natural surroundings. It also hosts the Plano Balloon Festival [5], which takes place in late Summer or early Fall, and is a beautiful sight to see.
Irvine, California
Irvine is a small coastal city located in Orange City that offers beautiful hiking, perfect weather year-round, and countless cultural and historical destinations. It's considered one of the safest cities in the US, and also one of the smartest, considering it's home to eight universities. Stop by Balboa Pier to catch a gorgeous sunset, or visit the Orange County Great Park and climb aboard the magnificent antique carousel that has a massive orange helium balloon anchored to it.
Madison, Wisconsin
This big college town is rich in history, stunning parks, and Insta-worthy architecture. The Winters are super snowy (fun fact: pretty much everyone drives a Subaru [6] to navigate the icy roads), but the Summers bring out nature enthusiasts. Hit one of the city's award-winning parks, shop along Willy Street [7], or grab a beer at one of their many local breweries. Through June and July, head to the King Street corner of Capitol Square with a packed picnic basket and listen to live music on the square, and make sure to bring some of that delicious local cheese.
Fremont, California
Tucked within the San Francisco Bay Area is Fremont, California. From some of the best Thai food you can find to its own Bollywood Theatre (à la BIG Cinemas) to Little Kabul (an Afghan neighbourhood), it's vibrant in culture. Try any of the above while you're there, or plan a visit during the wildly popular Summer Fremont Festival of the Arts [8].
Huntington Beach, California
This place has dreamy beach views, low-key vibes, abundant opportunities for surfing, and sunsets that'll bring a tear to your eye. Huntington Beach — located just Southeast of LA — is a must-visit place for anyone who loves the water. Walk down the iconic Huntington Beach Pier, bring your pup to the Huntington Dog Beach for a fun afternoon, or try your hand at surfing at Huntington State Beach.
Fargo, North Dakota
Fargo is the biggest city in North Dakota, and it's one of the happiest in the entire country, too. Like the others on the list, it's ample in natural beauty and culture. Step into the Plains Art Museum [9], a beautifully updated old warehouse that showcases Native American art. You could also check out all the animals at the Red River Zoo [10] (they have red pandas, guys!), or visit the truly picturesque Hjemkomst Centre [11], a museum that boasts a Hjemkomst Viking Ship and replica of the Hopperstad Stave Church.
Grand Prairie, Texas
Grand Prairie is the second of three Texas cities that make the list, so the state must be doing something right! If vintage charm is your MO then Grand Prairie should be your next holiday destination. San Jose, California
Also located in the Bay Area is San Jose, California. Given that, you probably won't be surprised to learn that it's a technological hub, but it also boasts rich culture and sweeping views. Anyone who appreciates architecture will be impressed with the Spanish Colonial Revival [15] structures downtown, and the Winchester Mystery House [16], a zany mansion with some very surprising details. Scottsdale, Arizona
You may think of fancy cars and luxury shopping when you think of Scottsdale, but there's really something for everyone in this upscale desert city. It's home to some of the world's best spas (indulge in a massage at Sanctuary on Camelback [18]), stunning hotels worthy of any magazine cover (Andaz [19] Scottsdale is super dreamy), incredible hiking (you'll feel accomplished after summiting Camelback), gorgeous sunsets, and amazing food.
San Francisco, California

Bismarck, North Dakota
The capital of North Dakota happens to be the happiest city in the state — and the 11th happiest in the country! Come Summer, it's lush with green landscapes. We recommend a trip to the North Dakota Heritage Centre & State Museum [22], the historic Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park [23], or the impressive Dakota Zoo [24], which is home to 600 species, including Bengal tigers, arctic foxes, and cotton-top tamarin.
Overland Park, Kansas
Overland Park is the epitome of Kansas in spirit, landscapes, and life philosophies. It's home to numerous beautiful parks, including Shawnee Mission Park [25], which boasts lake swimming, nature trails, and good fishing, and the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, which is a newer arboretum that's home to 13 sprawling gardens, 180 acres of prairie, and hiking trails featuring rocky bluffs.
Santa Rosa, California
Wine enthusiasts, gather round! Sonoma County's Santa Rosa is home to some of the best wine country in the world. Sioux Falls, South Dakota
As you might have surmised from the name of the city, Sioux Falls boasts some of the richest Native American history. Nine tribes call South Dakota home, and you can immerse and educate yourself at some of the Native American Reservations [33]. Pearl City, Hawaii
Of course a city from Hawaii made the list! Pearl City is located in Honolulu on Oʻahu Island. It's less of a tourist destination compared to places like Waikiki, but it ranks number two in terms of emotional and physical well-being on the list. Perhaps the biggest draw is the USS Memorial at Pearl Harbor [34], which honours the people who died during the Pearl Harbor attack.
Glendale, California
Glendale is part of Los Angeles County but feels more city-centric than beachy. Stroll through the open-air shopping at The American at Brand [35], be amazed by all the lights at the Museum of Neon Art [36], and catch a flick at the historic Alex Theatre [37].
San Diego, California
With its nonstop beach views, surfer vibes, and amazing food, this coastal city is definitely top-levels of chill. Spend an afternoon at Balboa Park [38], try paddle boarding at Ocean Beach, and don't forget to see the world-famous San Diego Zoo [39].
St. Paul, Minnesota
St. Paul beat out its twin city — that'd be Minneapolis, which ranked 26 — on the list. Nature lovers will feel like they're in heaven while exploring the stunning Minnehaha Park [40], and the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory [41] is a must-see, as well. If you're craving a little education, walk around the Science Museum of Minnesota [42].
Charleston, South Carolina
Those candy-coloured historic buildings, subtropical vibes, and delicious seafood would make anyone deliriously happy! Stroll down the cobblestone streets of historic downtown and you'll run into horse-drawn carriages and antebellum architecture. The lush grounds of the Magnolia Plantation [43] also boast historical charm, as does Waterfront Park [44].
