On the dawn of International Women's Day, the Palace of Westminster in London lit up with a series of light projections that spread messages of parity, female empowerment, and equality. The theme of this year's day is "Press for Progress", and that was the key message emblazoned across the iconic building, repeated in a number of languages to show solidarity with some of the many countries taking part in celebrations and activism during the day.

The hashtag was accompanied by a mention of Maya Angelou's powerful poem "Still I Rise", and quotes like "You are more than enough." The International Women's Day logo also featured in the line-up. Though the palace is currently undergoing renovations that hide the iconic Elizabeth Tower (home of Big Ben) under scaffolding, the effect of seeing these messages illuminated above the Thames was no less powerful, and a fitting start to an important day.
