Pisces Traits: What Are Pisces Like?

What People Get Wrong About Pisces's Personality Traits, According to an Astrologer

If you were born between Feb. 19 and March 20, that makes you a Pisces zodiac sign. And if that's the case, or if Pisces is your moon sign or rising sign, you might have heard that you're emotionally sensitive, hopelessly romantic, idealistic, and prone to daydreaming.

There's some truth to those stereotypes: those born under the intuitive water sign, ruled by dreamy Neptune, tend to have a wild imagination and an extraordinary sense of the supernatural (yes, I'm talking tarot cards and psychics). The sensitive sign is all about thinking outside of the box and transcending the material world — and people often fall head over heels for their creative minds and empathetic hearts.

But Pisces swim deeper than many people realise. Erin River Sunday, lead astrologer for Birthdate Co., gave POPSUGAR the scoop on Pisces's quirks, why they're considered the daydreamers of the zodiac, and what people sometimes miss about the water sign.

Pisces Traits: They're Chameleons

As a mutable sign, Pisces zodiac signs are one of the most versatile among the water element. They can adapt to pretty much any situation, as if they're swimming effortlessly between the unpredictable waves of life. Mutable signs are quick on their feet, and Pisce's added intuition makes them class-A shapeshifters. "Pisces can fit into many different groups because they often morph to embody the people they spend time around," Sunday says.

Although being flexible is their superpower, it often comes at a cost of missteps, and according to Sunday, "it can be difficult for a Pisces to focus, so absentmindedness happens when they have to shift tasks." Pisces don't always float right over mistakes or oversights, and can take it hard when they slip up. But this doesn't mean they're weak-willed or not up to a task. In fact, if they're able to cement a goal or desire, they have the emotional fortitude to commit or go after it, no matter what it takes.

Pisces Traits: They're Creative Visionaries

There are few things more fantastical and creative than a Pisces's imagination. These intuitive signs are always stirring up outlandish ideas, and because of their ties to the mystical world, they're often seen as ahead of their time. According to Sunday, their modern planetary ruler, Neptune, is responsible for their dreamy sense of imagination. "Neptune is very magical and illusive, much like human's creativity," Sunday explains. "Pisceans often seem to have an 'otherworldly' creative nature, accessing realms that many of us only dream of in order to create works of art." Safe to say that if you want to create magic, literally and figuratively, it's a good idea to consult a Pisces.

Pisces Traits: They're Overthinkers

Sure, Pisces may be an emotionally-driven water sign, but their sensitive empathy is what keeps them in their heads. That's probably because they're associated with the twelfth house of the subconscious, which makes them prone to being introspective — to a fault. What's more, Pisces are abstract thinkers, so it's easy for these signs to get lost in fantasy and dissect every detail in order to get a full understanding of a situation. "Pisces are often caught up in their daydreams, putting mundane tasks, like washing dishes, low on their priority list," Sunday points out. They also may avoid turning to others for help pulling themselves out of their heads; they're fiercely independent and enjoy solitude, which many people don't realise.

Pisces Traits: They're Escapists

Pisces may struggle with boundaries, which can be due in part to the sign's traditional ruler, Jupiter. This is the planet of abundance and prosperity, so mix that with Pisces's tendency to embellish and over-romanticize everything, and you can see why the water sign finds every reason to transcend reality via a spiritual getaway holiday. Their escapisms can be a double-edged sword, though. For example, they might not have the tightest grip on reality, even though their ability to bridge reality and the supernatural gives them the intuitive skills needed to understand themselves and others deeply. "Pisceans enjoy transcending time and space, so accessing a different realm through spirituality is common with this sign," Sunday says. While sometimes it's necessary to be grounded in the here and now, this ability to rise above can also be useful when Pisces need to access creativity, empathy, or a different way of looking at a situation.
