My Real-Life Sisters Are Also My Zodiac Sisters

My Sisters and I Are Also Zodiac Sisters, Which Is Why We Get Along So Well

Sisters balance each other out. You can be wildly different people, yet you still fit together in some weird, wonderful way. As the oldest sister in my family, my younger sisters have always been the ones to tell me what's cool (like feathered eyebrows and standing up for what you believe in) vs. what's not (like "dad" sunglasses and plastic straws). I taught my two baby sisters about feminism while watching Disney princess movies with them, and they taught me how to use my voice in a positive way to help others. But the thing I love most about my younger sisters, now 18 and 21, isn't how much I learn from them or how much fun I have reminding them that I rocked their looks first back in the '90s (hello again, butterfly clips and baggy jeans) — it's our incredibly close bond. I may be six-and-a-half years older, but the three of us have a friendship that is genuine, complicated, amazing, beautiful, and unlike any other relationship I've ever had. And I owe this crazy connection, in part, to our zodiac signs.

My sisters and I are sisters in the zodiac as well as by blood. My youngest sis, Savanna, is a Leo like me, and our middle sister, Summer, is an Aquarius. Sister signs are actually opposite on the zodiac wheel. Other sister signs include Pisces and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, and Cancer and Capricorn. Opposite signs actually complement each other, because each sign's unique strengths lift the other up, balancing them out and deeply connecting them.

Those with an Aquarius sign (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) are often passionate, laser focussed, outspoken about social injustices and inequality, love expressing themselves, and love learning new things. They are free-spirited and imaginative. This describes Summer perfectly, who is always quick to stand up for what is right. She's also in grad school studying to be a counselor, and loves training dogs, crocheting, and reading in her free time.

Leos (July 23-Aug. 22) are also passionate and free-spirited leaders. They are driven, brave, creative, warm, dramatic, and love being the centre of attention. Savanna loves channelling her creativity through her TikTok videos, painting projects, hair and makeup designs, or coming up with fun activities for kids that she babysits. She's planning on going to college to be an elementary school teacher, where I know she will shine with her bubbly, fun personality. I channel my creativity through writing, of course, and we both have dominant, strong opinions about everything.

My sisters and I bring out the best in each other. Savanna and I are more impulsive, getting an idea in our heads that sounds fun and wanting to do it right away, whereas Summer is more easy-going and thinks through things a little more. Sure, she'll agree to try a TikTok dance with us, but first she'll want us to change into matching shirts and go outside with better lighting. We're all creative and often push each other to think in new and different ways.

Sometimes our personalities will clash. Leos can be bossy and demanding (*cough*), but it's only because we think we know what's best. Aquariuses value their independence and don't like being told what to do, ever. This can have us all digging our heels in until there's no more room to move. When Summer is feeling overwhelmed and upset, she's more likely to shut down than have a confrontation. Putting effort into maintaining our close relationship matters, which is why she works to be more open, and we work to calm down and listen. Aquariuses are often deep thinkers too, so Savanna and I can gently nudge (or shove) Summer into action when the need arises. And we always bond over new Taylor Swift music, dying our hair, going shopping, and getting Starbucks. It's not uncommon for one of us to be in a fight with a sister, then get over it quickly because something happened that you just have to tell her now.

As two Leos, Savanna and I have our difficulties too. We both have strong opinions about things, and many times Summer has been a mediator, keeping the peace and helping us get over our problems. But at the end of the day, we understand each other. We may fight, but we also know exactly how to lift each other up. We love each other, it's as simple as that.

Twenty-two years ago, I remember telling everyone that would listen that I was going to have a little sister while my mom quietly reminded me that she didn't yet know the sex of her unborn baby. I was convinced it was going to be a girl because I already had two brothers — I needed a sister in my life. I was right, and a few years later, I got another sister, and I have never felt more blessed. Although I get along with my three brothers, there is a special connection the girls in my family have that just doesn't compare. We may argue constantly, but we know we have each other's backs. We're there for each other in the big and small moments, we see each other through mental and physical health struggles, we encourage each other to stand up for equality, and we always treat each other with love and respect. I don't know where I would be without my sisters.

I have two kids now — a Leo and an Aquarius — and I can only pray their relationship is as strong as mine is with my sisters. We have different personalities, true, but somehow, we just mesh. Our relationship was written in the stars!
