Last Year's Beauty Trends Are Getting a Big Makeover in 2019

For some of us, the new year was an opportunity to explore new things and shed the bad habits that no longer brought us joy, but when it came to beauty, there were a few looks that were just too hard to part with. The coolest hair colour techniques, graphic swipes of eyeliner, and artistic nail art we saw in the last 12 months needed to make their way into the new year.

Unlike our exes' contact info, we've brought the following beauty looks into 2019 — well, after they got a fresh, modern update from our favourite pros.

"Cold brew hair" took over Instagram with swirls of warm brown in 2018.

"This is the look on all the hottest models and influencers filling your Instagram," Jack Howard, colourist at UK's Paul Edmonds Salon and Schwarzkopf global Blondme ambassador, told POPSUGAR. "It's lighter around the face and has a balance that's pleasing to the eye. You need that contrast to stop the colour from looking solid, which can look like an ombré or a single process."

The midlength shag — which worked particularly well on thicker hair — was one of 2018's hottest haircuts. It came with tons of texture and layers, and a thick curtain of bangs really added to the glam-grunge effect.

This year's update to the shag actually takes us back a decade. Hairstylist Patrick Kyle endorsed the '70s shag style as the ultimate transitional style. "The soft fringe grows out so well, and it looks great on any length hair," he explained.

Celebrity manicurist and Kiss Nails brand ambassador Gina Edwards sees pastel metallics being big for Spring. "Designers have created their 2019 Spring collections to emulate a bit of the '60s with adding a fresh updated twist," she said. "Frosted metallics and sheers will start the anticipation for the same on nail trends. I predict that superchic pastels layered with a sheer frost will make a subtle statement for the upcoming season."

A trend of swipes of colour underneath the eye made its way onto both the runway and red carpet last year.

This year, make a statement with swipes of graphic eyeliner. "Pair colours like cobalt blues, deep greens, and traditional black liners with a natural-looking skin look," celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli told POPSUGAR.

More delicate works of (body) art filled Pinterest boards with ink inspo in 2018.

Tattooist Keith "Bang Bang" McCurdy — whose painstaking, fine line work fuelled the tiny tattoo trend last year — says 2019 will incorporate the same intricate details, but they may start to look a little larger.
