Forget retinol and hyaluronic acid. The latest skincare ingredient causing a stir in beauty is colloidal silver. But what exactly is it? And can it really live up to the hype?

"Colloidal silver is an exceptional skincare ingredient that helps to calm the skin by reducing inflammation and fight bacteria without destroying the natural fauna of your skin," Joy Isaacs, founder of Argentum Apothecary, tells POPSUGAR.

Touted for its antibacterial properties, Isaac explains that it is particularly effective for people suffering from skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and acne.

So far, so great. But is there anything to watch out for when it comes to this ingredient? "Talking about colloidal silver can sometimes be confusing because it is a general term that encompasses any liquid, usually water, containing a suspension of very small silver particles," neuroscientist and natural beauty expert Leigh Winters explains.

So in fact it seems that not all colloidal silver is created equal.

Skincare brand COR explains the importance of understanding what exactly you are putting on your face. "When you're checking out products, be sure to read your labels and make sure you're comfortable with the ingredients and process," states the brand's website. COR uses nano silver particles, which it explains are compatible with the body, while it warns ionic silver should be avoided at all costs, as it can build up within the body over time. The safest option of course is to go for trusted brands. "While it's pretty easy to come across, I'd steer clear of trying your DIY hand with colloidal silver. If you're interested in seeing what this buzzy ingredient can do for you, look for products in which it's an ingredient," says Winters. So let's find out what the winners are when it comes to colloidal silver skincare products: keep reading to shop the very best.
