Hair Colour Ideas to Try in 2024, According to Experts

The Experts Have Spoken: Here's the Four Hair Colour Ideas You Need to Know For 2024

In the last three-plus years, hair colour went from boxed hair dye and grown-out roots to some semblance of normalcy. Now, as we look ahead to the new year, experts say the best new hair colour ideas you'll see in 2024 will lean one of two ways: either very low-key or kicked up 10 octaves.

We've already seen some standout looks from the likes of singer Dua Lipa and FLO band member Jorja Douglas, who debuted their cherry red hair earlier this year, meanwhile, Rihanna has stepped out with syrup blonde hair, which celebrity stylist and Goldwell global ambassador Angelo Seminara believes will be a strong hair colour choice this year.

"Like golden rays of sunshine, this warm blonde colour exudes the essence of effortless beauty, reminiscent of a summer day with hints of Cara Delevigne's captivating charm and Sienna Miller's timeless elegance," he tells POPSUGAR UK.

On the other hand "lived-in" colours are becoming a popular request, according to Sophie Cabell from House of Keune by Bloom, who tells us that the shades fit perfectly into the low-maintenance trends that champion effortless beauty.

"With softer, more natural roots, the grow-out process is less noticeable, allowing for longer intervals between salon visits," she says. "This appeals to clients seeking a chic yet practical look this spring and summer."

Syrup Blonde

This hair colour idea for blondes is fully backed by Seminara, who's given us the lowdown on how to get the best from the syrup blonde shade, which he admits will be "perfect for spring" this year.

"Syrup blonde is natural and wearable especially if you add some lowlights which will help add a new dimension to the hair," he explains. Cherry Red

Our obsession with Dua Lipa's red hair colour continues — this stunning, classy red hue strikes the perfect balance between boldness and sophistication.

"Unlike some brighter shades that can come across as too flashy, this cherry red exudes richness and depth, enhancing her overall look," says Cabell. But, be warned, although this red hair colour idea is trending ahead of spring, getting the same shade as Lipa's could be trickier than it seems, especially if you're starting from a darker base.

"Maintaining this vibrant colour often involves regular toning to keep the red looking fresh and vibrant. For added dimension and interest, incorporating slices of highlights can work wonders. These highlights, when toned with a pure red shade, can create depth within the overall colour, enhancing its richness and complexity."

Mocha or Latte Blonde

Cabell also says mocha or latte blonde shades will be a big 2024 colour trend — both of which are ideal if you're looking for warm, brown hair colour ideas, as you transition to a lighter blonde.

"The variations of warm, honey-toned blondes such as mochas and latte blondes are popular choices. These shades combine soft brunettes and blondes to create a subtle yet captivating blend, providing clients with a sophisticated and versatile look," she tells us.

Lived-In Copper

As we step away from heavily thought about, high maintenance beauty trends and embrace the "lazy girl" look, hearing that lived-in colours are due to trend in 2024 when it comes to hair colour is music to the ears.

"In recent trends, more 'lived-in' colours have gained popularity across various hair shades, including blonde, brunette, and copper. Customers are often requesting softer, more natural roots with their chosen colour," Cabell reveals, explaining that while copper is the colour of the season, the lived-in version of this shade is due to rank higher in popularity this spring.

"But, achieving the desired lived-in look typically requires professional expertise. The process often involves highlights and a root stretch technique, seamlessly melted into toner for a natural finish. Due to the intricacy of the technique and the need for specific products, it's generally best to visit a salon for optimal results."
