These Cuts Are Going to Be Huge in 2019, According to Hairstylists

Some day we'll be able to try out every new haircut trend using only our brain waves. Until then, the formula to a pulling off a fresh chop in 2019 is simple: enlist the advice of the pros, bring plenty of hair inspiration to your stylist, say a little prayer to your maker, and just . . . take the leap.

"It is liberating to make a big hair change, and we often see this happening a lot as the new year begins," said celebrity hairstylist Laurie Heaps. "It is a signal to start fresh and conquer the coming year on your own terms."

Now is the time to switch things up, but because we can't hold your hand all the way to the salon, we wanted to make the rest of the process pretty easy. Check out the styles you'll be seeing everywhere in the not-too-distant future, ahead.

Wispy Fringe

When it comes to getting banged in 2019, there is more than one way you can go. The first is with a curtain fringe: "Think Brigitte Bardot," said Heaps. "This is a sexy, longer bang that parts in the middle. I am loving everything retro right now and love seeing how trends come back into style again. This is also a great style for anyone who is considering bangs for the first time since they are longer and taper off."

Want something more cutting edge? Keep the fringe soft, but try a fringe "that either fall right at the eyebrows for those who have more depth to their foreheads or go a bit above for those who have smaller foreheads," said Nicole Leal, master stylist at Nine Zero One salon.

The Lob 2.0

The biggest haircut of 2018 (and 2017, and 2016 . . .) was indubitably the "lob," but the same style can look totally different in 2019 with blunt ends or without the layers. "To make the cut on-trend for the new year, it should be straighter and sleeker," said Heaps. "The look is more one-length on the ends." Leal echoed this sentiment, and added that this modern iteration swaps out texture for smoother effect or severed angle.

Shaggy Pixie

Even short haircuts need to grow up. "You will be seeing an updated version of the pixie full of texture," said Heaps. "It is a beautiful, roughed-up style with dimension and movement. For this cut, you want more length on the sides and back. This shagginess is created by having hair longer than a traditional pixie."

XL Hair

Hair-down-to-there has been grazing the rear ends of celebs like J. Lo and Ariana Grande for the last few years, but longer-than-usual ends are going to make a huge appearance on everyone in 2019. Few people are lucky enough to to be able to get this look naturally (even with all the magical hair growth potions out there), but a good salon can source you some extralong extensions. "Longer hair will be a lot more manageable because it's going to be about effortless texture instead of structured waves," said Leal. " It's also great for accessorising with hair clips and hats."
