Little Mix Simple Choose Kindness Campaign Interview

Little Mix Partners With Simple on Their #ChooseKindness Campaign: "It's Something We're Very Passionate About"

As celebrities, the the members of Little Mix are no strangers to online bullying. That's why, for their second time teaming up with Simple Skincare, they collaborated on an initiative that's main goal is all about spreading kindness. In partnership with the charity Ditch the Label, the #ChooseKindness campaign is a way to remind everyone why we as a society need to be kinder to one another. But this is way more than just a hashtag. Not only is the money raised from the campaign being used by Ditch the Label to continue their work helping young people affected by cyber bullying, but back in June, the charity created an online support hub that teens can go to if they're being bullied online.

To celebrate the initiative, POPSUGAR chatted with the girl group — Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson — all about kindness: how they inspire it in their fans, how they practice it amongst each other, and even how they show it to their skin.

POPSUGAR: Why was it important for you to participate in this campaign with Simple and Ditch the Label?
Jade Thirlwall: It was really important for us because it's something we've always stood for as a group since the very beginning, and it seemed to really fitting to join on. It's something we're very passionate about. We're aware that we have a lot of younger fans and we wanted to put out a good message to everyone about kindness, especially in this era of social media where it's so easy to see negativity. I think it's important there are more campaigns about kindness out there.

PS: Celebrities have to deal with internet trolls and negative comments on a much larger scale; how have you learned to handle that and stay positive?
JT: Well for one, we've had to grow a bit of a thick skin, and two, I think you learn to start to care less. We're surrounded by positive people all the time. It used to get to us a lot when we first entered the industry, but now, I guess you realise that the people that are so negative and saying horrible things are the ones who are really insecure themselves.
Perrie Edwards: We used to look for it and it was really unhealthy, but now we just avoid it. I think that's kind of come with age and experience being in the industry.

"I just think we're really positive to each other and that's been the key to our friendship and success over the years."

PS: Do you ever take social media breaks to get away from it?
Leigh-Anne Pinnock: Oh yes, we try to. So last night I was forced to start reading instead of going through my phone, which I felt was really quite refreshing. So I think it's good to give yourself a break, because constantly scrolling through your phone — there's so much more to see in the world than literally just an iPhone.

PS: Do you have any advice to anyone who's experienced bullying or who has received mean comments online?
LAP: We always say that one, to just try to ignore it, because it literally is just jealous people and if people don't have anything good to say than . . .
JT: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it all!
LAP: It is easier said than done, because we've all been there, where we've literally hunted for it, and it helped us when we stopped looking for it and we focused on the positives; and it's really just surrounding yourself with amazing, positive friends and family — I think that's always going to help.

"Kindness needs to be a part of everyday life. It's easier to be kind than it is to be negative."

PS: How do you guys practice kindness to yourselves and to one another?
JT: I think we're really good with each other, that's why we're still together all these years later. Our friendship comes first. We always compliment each other, we bring each other up, we encourage each other to do the best that we can. I just think we're really positive to each other and that's been the key to our friendship and success over the years.

PS: And that can definitely apply to all of your fans as a good piece of advice as well, to make sure you're practising kindness outside of social media.
PE: Yeah, of course, kindness needs to be a part of everyday life. It's easier to be kind than it is to be negative. Being negative takes way more energy than being nice.

PS: Simple is a brand known for being kind to your skin. I understand you like the face wipes on tour. Do you have any other favourite products?
JT: I use the moisturiser every day, and I love using the undereye masks. I use them nearly every other day, like if I'm going out for the night or if I have a long day of work, I just pop those masks in the morning and rub the serum in, it really wakes me up. They're my favourite.

PS: Speaking of being on tour, you have one coming up. Have you already started preparing?
JT: Yeah! We've had meetings for it, we've sorted out the set list, and the vibe of the tour and exactly how we want to do it, and we started rehearsals back in June. I can't wait, it's our favourite part of what we do.

PS: What about touring makes it your favourite thing?
JT: I think it's just that's what we started doing this for. We love performing, we love singing, dancing, we get to see all the fans every night, you get to travel. It's so much fun. It really ticks every box.

PS: Is there anything else you'd like to tell your fans about the #ChooseKindness campaign?
JT: Just that we hope everyone gets on board and joins in with the campaign. We've already seen a lot of positive stuff on social media surrounding the video, where we replace bad words with good ones. I just think it's nice for people to see on their timeline, instead of seeing perfection all the time, or seeing negative things, it's nice to see some positivity there.
