Summer Hair Colour Trends 2019

The Summer Hair Colour Trends You'll Want to Start Wearing Now

Only a handful of people can actually swing the carefree, Hamptons-every-weekend lifestyle, where your hair looks kissed by the sun only because it takes you 20 minutes to paddle from your pool float to the swim-up bar. (Yes, this group also rhymes with "one shmercent.") Still, that doesn't mean you can't get that same lived-in colour this Summer from a trip . . . it's just to the salon.

"People are going bolder for Summer, but that doesn't necessarily mean more maintenance."

In fact, the upcoming season's biggest hair trends are taking inspiration from the elements — think: white sand beaches, seashells, the sunrise and sunset — to recreate a laid-back look that screams "I don't have a care in the world other than what I'm wearing to Surf Lodge tonight," even if you're stuck in your apartment hundreds of miles away.

"People are going bolder for Summer, but that doesn't necessarily mean more maintenance," said Stephanie Brown, colourist at IGK Salon in NYC. "Highlights will be lighter and brighter, but since most of these looks are rooted — meaning the colour starts further away from the roots — you don't have to get it done as often." Sounds breezy, no?

Ahead, Brown is breaking down the coolest hair colours to try before the warm weather hits. It's no beachfront holiday, but spending a fraction of what it'd cost to split an exorbitantly-priced house with 10 of your friends can feel like its own kind of ticket to paradise.

The copper hair trend isn't slowing down for Summer, but it will be getting a seasonal twist. "For light brunettes, you will be seeing a more warm subtle highlight like Beyoncé, Gigi, and Debbie Ryan," said Brown. "This colour is beautiful and golden — almost like a sunset, which in my opinion is the best thing about the Summer."

White Sand Hair Colour

There are two iterations of this sunny hair trend, and it depends solely on your base colour and skin tone. "For the lighter blondes, very pale babylights — almost white blond — will be trending, especially around the face and lighter at the ends," she said. "This icy hair colour is a bit bolder but isn't as extreme as platinum. This is great for neutral to cooler skin tones, and looks great against a spray tan."

If you have warmer undertones, Brown says you can still pull off the pale blond look, but you might need to warm up your base colour first. "Try a creamier blond colour Dove Cameron or Lili Reinhardt," she said.

"A riskier trend you can anticipate seeing this Summer is bright pink — almost like a watermelon shade," said Brown. "Since the Pantone Colour Of the Year is 'living coral,' this pink will be a bit brighter than the cooler pastel pinks we've been seeing in Spring and on the slightly warmer side."

Sunset Ombre Hair Colour

"To add some beachiness to medium to dark brown hair colours, we'll be seeing a slightly lighter ombré that's a little bolder," said Brown. "This doesn't mean a drastic change where it doesn't look natural, but it will definitely look lighter than what we've been seeing for Winter and Spring." Stick to neutral tones — like mushroom or ash — so the highlights "brighten up around your face without being red or too warm."

"We'll also see darker reds on the more neutral side with flecks of copper weaved in to reflect in the sun," said Brown. "So, in the sunlight the red will be bright and vibrant without being too copper or neon-looking."

Seashell Blond Hair

Everybody likes seashells in the Summer time (are we right?) but it also makes for rad hair colour inspiration. "Sandy beach colours with a rootier look are on-trend for dark blondes," she said. "Neutral tones like these are great for all skin tones since its neither cool nor warm. I'd suggest a high-up ombré or off the root-type highlight with the brightness around your face."

Strawberry Lemonade Hair Colour

For natural redheads with a lighter base colour, a "soft strawberry blond will be their summer go-to look," said Brown. "It's about adding in golden blond highlights to that strawberry blond colour for an I-spent-all-day-in-the-sun look." Sounds dreamy, no?
