8 Things Beauty-Lovers Have Searched For the Most During Lockdown

As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you'll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work.

While our lives, and our beauty regimes, adapt to a life of social distancing, it seems we're asking Google a lot more beauty-related questions than ever before. A result of not being able to get to salons and spas? Most definitely. But while we're all home trying to figure out the beauty basics — like how to conceal grey roots or why our skin is breaking out like crazy — we thought we'd fast track your search for you.

We've partnered together with Spate, a machine intelligence platform, Google (of course!), and trendsetting beauty wholesale platform Curate Beauty to unveil the most searched for beauty products, categories, and inquiries that you need answers to. While providing solutions to some of your burning beauty questions, we'll also introduce you to some of the latest and greatest indie brands making waves within these categories.

Female-Owned Beauty Brands

According to a report from the Boston Consulting Group, female-founded beauty brands generated 10 percent more revenue on average over a five-year period than male-founded companies. That could partially explain why over 70 percent of brands on Curate Beauty — a digital wholesale marketplace for retailers to discover indie beauty brands — are founded by women. One of the brands is innovative feminine care company &Sisters. The brand has developed organic cotton tampons and the very first paper-wrapped nonapplicator tampons, ensuring its products are not only kind to the body, but to the planet, too. From £2, The &Sisters Naked Tampons (£2-£8) are available in very light, light, medium, and heavy absorbencies.

Conscious and Clean Beauty Products

While 45 percent of Curate Beauty's customers are clean boutiques, this category on their site has grown exponentially in the last four weeks, with clicks into the collection upped by 285 percent. Key players in this arena are brands not only conscious of their ingredients, but also taking into account their packaging and carbon footprint, too. Take Frank's Remedies Ultimate Detox Mask (£32), which uses activated charcoal made from coconut shells — a more planet-positive, sustainable alternative to standard charcoal.

Hand Care

The growth in searches for hand care has spiked by 606.4 percent compared to this time last year. Whether you're making up for missed manicure appointments or you're dealing with the consequences of continuous hand washing, a nourishing hand cream or oil is a must have in this current climate. We love Nursem, the affordable-but-effective hand care brand that also donates a month's worth of free Nursem products to a nurse or midwife with every product sold. The Nursem Caring Hand Cream (£10) is a bestseller that's currently sold out, but will be back in stock by the end of June.

Hair Oils & Treatments

We may not be styling our hair every day while working from home, but our Zoom meetings call for a need to look somewhat presentable. According to Spate, there has been a 71.4 percent growth in searches for hair oils since last year, with many keyword searches indicating the want for natural ingredients — such as coconut, jojoba, and avocado oils. For a scalp-friendly solution that also nourishes the lengths and ends, try Neighbourhood Botanicals' Age of Aquarius Hair Oil (£29), which uses jojoba oil, camellia oil, and shea butter to hydrate, smooth, and add incredible shine.

Skin-Care Devices

Missing your aesthetician as much as we are? While we can't get a professional facial during lockdown, derma rollers — at-home microneedling devices that, according to Google, have seen a 54.4 percent growth in searches since this time last year — are the next best thing. One of the most requested brands on Curate Beauty has been Flexi Skin London, a London spa brand that provides at-home tools inspired by professional skin-care services. The Microneedler (£35) is safe and easy to use at home, with 0.25mm needles that create micro-channels in the top layer of the skin, encouraging cell repair and collagen production to promote firmer skin, finer-looking lines, and a more even-toned complexion.

Candles

As we're all spending more time at home, it's no surprise that candles have been one of Google's most popular searches, with over 305,000 in the month of May. Find Candles are made of 100-percent natural essential oils and hand poured in small batches, with therapeutic blends that inspire and promote well-being. "Simple nature candles" has also been a keyword, and this British brand encompasses that completely, while also coming in at a superaffordable under-£20 price tag.

Face Masks as a Form of At-Home Self Care

DIY beauty searches during lockdown have soared in comparison to this time last year, according to Google analytics. The search for "face mask" was up 233 percent, and lucky for us, a Sunday pamper at home with a fancy face mask isn't too out of reach. Try Keep Cool's Shine Intensive Brightening Mask (£3); the brand's unique ingredient complex "Cool Keeper" — derived from Korean antipyretic herbs — helps to bring your skin to its optimal temperature, leading to a fresher, plumper, more hydrated complexion.

Sexual Wellness

A third of Brits have said they have used lockdown to spend more time with their significant other. Hard not to, right? Well, interestingly, wholesale marketplace Curate Beauty has seen a 225 percent increase in views in their Sexual Wellness category, which includes Hanx's Biodegradable Condoms (£2 and up), Chakrubs Crystal Sex Toys (£41 and up), and a botanical tincture from Be Sexy, from Blooming Blends, which is infused with ingredients to invigorate the senses.
