R + Co Sea Salt Spray

R+Co Sea Salt Spray (£11.50), another favourite of Eagland's, can be applied to damp or dry hair to give your hair just enough grit and texture without making it feel dirty. "I mist this through the hair being careful not to spray it too close to the scalp," he says of his application technique. "Then I'll either rough-dry the hair with my fingers or use a diffuser, depending on how natural I want the look to be. This then gives me the ideal base for any type of heat styling I'll do after."

Eagland's top tip: Always be aware of the texture and thickness of your hair. Finer hair needs much less product than thicker, heavier textures.

Virtue Texturizing Spray

"In Los Angeles, the biggest haircut I'm doing right now is the bob and long bob and I use Virtue Texturizing Spray (£34) on almost all of my clients," says hairstylist Buddy Porter (he's a global ambassador for Virtue). "Unlike most texture sprays, which are gritty and can weigh down the hair, this is extremely light and airy — I could use an entire can in someone's hair and you'd still be able to get my fingers through it." Because of this, it's also super user-friendly: Spray it onto dry hair and scrunch it in to break up waves or add definition to straight hair, says Eagland, adding that "it's also great to revive a two-day-old blow dry that's fallen a little flat."

Hershesons Almost Everything Cream

As the name suggests, Hershesons Almost Everything Cream (£10 promises to do it all. On damp hair, it acts like a primer and leave-in conditioner, while on dry hair it's kind of like a hybrid between a styling cream and a very lightweight pomade. Our favourite way to use it on a bob? "Rub the cream between your palms and then roll the ends of your hair between your hands to separate them and make them look a little piece-y," says Jordan Garrett, hairstylist at Hershesons salon in London. We also love to run a tiny dab of the cream over any face-framing pieces of hair that tend to get a little fuzzy throughout the day.

GHD Original Hair Straightener

For a styling tool that does it all, London-based hairstylist Jonny Eagland (he had a part to play in Charlize Theron's incredible bowl cut) recommends GHD Original Hair Straightener (£87). "This can help you to create a multitude of different waves and also give you that sharp, polished finish on your hair." His top tip is to bend the hair from side to side (almost like a finger wave) whilst clamping the iron at each bend to create a less voluminous, cooler finish that can be styled with or without product depending on how you prefer your hair. In addition to the GHD, "any Hot Tools iron will work magic on the hair," he added.

Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine

This classic multipurpose product — which could best be described as a mash-up between a stying cream and a hair oil — is a favourite amongst hairstylists for its ability to not only create definition and separation in the hair, but also add moisture and shine. When it comes to bobs specifically, hairstylist Teddi Cranford (founder of
White Rose Collective salon in New York City), likes to use Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine (£22) "to add healthy-looking texture" to hair textures that range from straight to wavy, scrunching it in from mid-lengths to ends.
