Jess Gilbo came out of the closet as a teen and experienced her family's homophobia and rejection. Her best friend nominated her to help her feel cared for and loved by the people who support her.
With Van Ness's help, Gilbo embraces her natural hair. He cut out the hair that had been relaxed and gave her a gorgeous pixie cut showing off her tight curly texture. "I really want her to see that you don't need to make the choice to subscribe to these false ideas of beauty," he explained.
Van Ness suggests that those with this curl pattern keep a wide tooth comb in the shower to work your conditioner into your hair. Another tip? Use a curly lotion in your hair and take a Wet Brush (£12) to comb it through your strands.
