The Best Tattoo Trends For Summer 2020

There's No Shortage of Ink Inspiration With This Summer's Biggest Tattoo Trends

Selecting your next tattoo is no easy task — it's a big decision that can often be years in the making. There are many factors to take into consideration: personal preference, sentimental value, location, and the latest trends. While we can't help you navigate the first few factors, we can lend a hand with the latter.

While most people took the spring season off from getting any fresh ink, many parlors have since reopened and started accepting appointments again (or they will be soon). If anything, all of this time at home has given us ample opportunities to gather summer tattoo ideas in preparation for the first session back.

If you're itching to get inked again, you're not alone — celebrities like Lucy Hale and Storm Reid have already rushed back to their favourite tattoo artist for a new addition.

For anyone looking to get a new tattoo this summer, you'll find no shortage of creative and fresh trends to pull inspiration from. "It's best to do what's true to your heart — that will always be trendy," Los Angeles-based celebrity tattoo artist and BodyMark Creative Director Miryam Lumpini, aka The Witchdoctor, told POPSUGAR. Keep reading to see all of her trend predictions.

Outline tattoos are nothing new, and they're not disappearing anytime soon. "Think of a tattoo that is minimalist, very simple, and just lines," Lumpini said. This popular trend is for anyone who likes clean designs and no colour or shading. It can work with any design or object.

For those who like a bolder look, Lumpini predicts high-contrast colour tattoos will grow in popularity this summer. "[This involves] incorporating high contrast into a tattoo by putting a lighter colour down next to a darker colour, which allows the colours to be vibrant and pop," she said.

For this trend, Lumpini loves using BIC BodyMark Temporary Tattoo Markers to experiment with colours before committing to permanent ink.

Prepare to see very intricate tattoos, ranging from small to big in size. "Depending on what you're doing, this can mean adding extra dimension with shading or fine lines to create the full piece," Lumpini said. Adding this extra level of detailing can also be done through hypercolor realism, another popular tattoo trend for 2020.

While many of this summer's tattoo trends will largely be unaffected by COVID-19, Lumpini feels the pandemic will have influence on one trend. "I believe more flowers and things that inspire beauty, light, and positive energy are going to be more of a trend because of the current climate," she said.
