12 Times Celebrities Predicted Their Own Success on Twitter

If 2021 was the year we learned to care for ourselves better — even in small ways — 2022 is the year we're ready to go all out and make our dreams come true. To kick-start the new year with some much-needed inspiration, Twitter started a thread on 19 Jan. sharing tweets from celebrities who predicted their fame and success before it came true. "If you can dream it, Tweet it," Twitter captioned a photo of Megan Thee Stallion superimposed with a tweet the singer posted on 27 May, 2014. "I need a team bc I promise rap gone take off for me," Megan wrote over six years before the release of her 2020 album, Good News.

But Megan isn't the only celebrity who manifested a future full of success. "I'm gonna be nominated for an oscar one day. Already claiming it," Hair Love director Matthew A. Cherry wrote in a tweet on 2 June, 2012. Nearly 10 years later, on 15 Jan., 2022, Matthew wrote, "Literally unreal. Manifest your dreams! It costs you nothing and you never know, one day it might come true," referring to his 2020 Academy Award for best animated short.

Between tweets written by Lil Nas X, Niall Horan, Demi Lovato, Megan Thee Stallion, and more, there's something to be said for the power of hope and determination. See which celebrities had the foresight to predict their fame here.

Lil Nas X posted a video on 8 Jan., 2019, reflecting on the fact that he had just reached 3,000 followers on Instagram, 2,000 on YouTube, and fewer than 1,000 followers on Spotify. "But let me hit y'all back a year from now. We're going to see where I'm at," he said while eating a slice of pizza.

Exactly one year later, on 8 Jan., 2020, the "Montero" singer reenacted the video, pizza and all, to reflect on his newfound success. "A year ago, I put out 'Old Town Road.' It did pretty f*cking good," he said. "I'm at five million on Instagram, eight million on YouTube, and around 30 million Spotify listeners. It's been a year, and I just want to give a big thank you to everybody who's helped me get to where I am. I'll be back with you guys 10 years from now and we'll see where I'm at."

Mo Gilligan shared a tweet in 2013, saying "I need to host the MOBOs or the BRIT Awards" and adding "Ok it didn't happen in 2013 but I definitely put it out there into the universe. #lawofattraction." In 2021, Gilligan announced that he'd be the host of the 2022 BRIT Awards, and re-shared his initial tweet.

On 7 Feb., 2010, Demi Lovato tweeted that they would like to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl one day. In 2020, exactly 10 years later, Lovato lived their dream and delivered a powerful rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Miami.

Simu Liu hit up Marvel on 3 Dec., 2018, for an opportunity to star as the lead character in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Fast-forward three years, and it's hard to find a Marvel fan who isn't in love with Liu's portrayal of Shang-Chi.

Before Issa Rae stole our hearts with Insecure, she shared her dreams with her loyal Twitter followers. "When I grow up, I want to be a more successful version of me," she wrote. Over a decade later, Rae has starred in The Hate U Give, Hair Love, and The Lovebirds; hosted Saturday Night Live; been in seven music videos; and accepted a BET Award and an NAACP Image Award for her role on Insecure. So, yeah, we'd say she's a more successful version of herself for sure.

Shawn Mendes told his Twitter followers in 2013 that he dreamed of being on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The star has since been on the show too many times to count, the first time being his 2016 performance on the show alongside Camila Cabello.

Niall Horan has been on too many world tours to count as a member of One Direction and as a solo artist since he first auditioned for The X Factor in 2010. But looking back on his tweet — "hope it all [works] out" — is a hopeful reminder that sometimes success is right around the corner.

In a since-deleted tweet, Ariana Grande gushed about her love for Wicked, saying that she hoped to play Glinda the Good Witch one day. Ten years after she posted the tweet, Grande shared the stage with Wicked stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel to perform "The Wizard and I" at NBC's 15th anniversary Wicked special. "I'm not sure if I've ever been this proud. From the very first day I met you (swipe to see!!), you were destined for this role," Chenoweth captioned a post on Instagram celebrating Grande's success.
