In December 2019, Us Weekly revealed that the actress is engaged and expecting a child with Hamilton director Thomas Kail. The two previously worked together on FX's Fosse/Verdon, which Thomas produced and directed. The engagement comes less than a year after Michelle split from husband Phil Elverum in April 2019. Michelle is also a mom to 14-year-old daughter Matilda, whom she shared with the late Heath Ledger.
