10 Powerful Songs From Grey's Anatomy Season 15 That We'll Be Crying Over For Months

Is it even Grey's Anatomy if you go an episode without crying to a song and then immediately looking it up afterward? The show is notorious for its use of indie-rock artists and melancholy Sleeping at Last covers. For season 15, the long-running medical drama enlisted emotional tracks from more obscure artists, including British indie-pop chanteuse Bishop Briggs and folk-rock singer Tommy Ashby. Most notably, it paid respect to Dia de los Muertos with an emotional Spanish cover of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," aka the ballad that made you cry your eyes out when Denny Duquette and Derek left the show. 1. "Out of the Blue" by Fleurie

  • Episode: "With a Wonder and Wild Desire"
  • When it plays: If you've watched TV, you may have heard of Nashville indie-pop singer Fleurie, whose work has been featured on Pretty Little Liars, Bones, Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, and more. Her ballad starts when Jo explains her groundbreaking medical idea to Alex and Meredith threatens to hurt Jackson if he does anything bad to Maggie. And, "out of the blue," Meredith bumps into dreamy Link.

2. "Someone to Watch Over Me" by Sleeping at Last

  • Episode: "Broken Together"
  • When it plays: Grey's Anatomy, of course, uses Sleeping at Last's tender indie spin on Ella Fitzgerald's "Someone to Watch Over Me" in its much-anticipated two-part 15th season premiere. In the episode, the song plays when Maggie and Meredith tell their matchmaker patient that the person she accidentally hit has passed. For Omelia fans, it's also when Owen tells Amelia that he wants "strings attached."

3. "Come This Far" by Chloe Kohanski

  • Episode: "Gut Feeling"
  • When it plays: The third episode of season 15 opens with The Voice winner Chloe Kohanski's fired-up rock single as we see Owen and Amelia get hot and bothered, Ben kiss Bailey, Alex drive into his chief parking spot, and Amelia and Maggie chatter about fine Dr. DeLuca on a motorcycle. You know, just typical Grey's happenings.

4. "Hi-Lo" by Bishop Briggs

  • Episode: "Gut Feeling"
  • When it plays: Bishop Briggs's catchy, rhythmic "Hi-Low" is in the background when Amelia comforts Maggie about Jackson's disappearing act, while post-op shop teacher Mr. Buckley sees his student that he accidentally hurt.

5. "High Hope" by Patrick Droney

  • Episode: "Momma Knows Best"
  • When it plays: Patrick Droney's soulful song makes its debut when Maggie urges her patient's husband to let their child know that she's dying. At the same time, Meredith's date takes a turn for the worst after she reveals to John that she is a single mother of three.

6. "Bound Together" by Kate York feat. Vanyo

  • Episode: "Everyday Angel"
  • When it plays: You hear Kate York's airy and ethereal song in the background after Jackson wraps up his surgery and tells Maggie that he's done with leaving, while Teddy expresses her gratitude to Meredith for her talk about Owen.

7. "Hummingbird" by Nilu

  • Episode: "Flowers Grow Out of My Grave"
  • When it plays: Remember Nilu? Her emotional "Are You With Me" pops up when April has a crisis of faith in season 14 and sleeps with Vik the intern. This season, the singer's angsty "Hummingbird" plays as Meredith tells Jackson and Maggie that her father is dying.

8. "Chasing Cars" by Moon & Sun

  • Episode: "Flowers Grow Out of My Grave"
  • When it plays: After patching up her young patient, Meredith, with a marigold in her hair, suddenly thinks about the ghosts of her past, including Lexie, George, Ellis, Baxter, Sloan, and, of course, Derek. Tears will be inevitable when you hear this Spanish version of "Chasing Cars" in an episode about the Day of the Dead with all of those throwback characters.

9. "Solace" by Tommy Ashby

  • Episode: "Anybody Have a Map?"
  • When it plays: Tommy Ashby's melancholy "Solace" can be heard after Dr. Webber's friend Frankie flatlines during surgery and he has to tell her fellow nurses that she has died.

10. "Rescue" by Lauren Daigle

  • Episode: "Anybody Have a Map?"
  • When it plays: Grey's penultimate Fall episode ends with Lauren Daigle's hymn-like "Rescue." Catherine tells Tom and Meredith that they will find a way to help her with her cancer, and Richard calls Meredith to let her know that he's been arrested.
