Doctor Strange Sequel Details

The Doctor Strange Sequel Has Been Confirmed, and It Will Be Marvel's First Horror Movie

After months of wondering whether or not there would be a Doctor Strange sequel, the guessing is finally over. Titled Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, the sequel was officially confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at Comic-Con on Saturday, as he gave us the juicy details on the fourth phase of the ever-expanding universe. The film will be released in May 2021 as part of a suite of 10 Marvel films that will be released over the next two years.

The third Marvel phase ended with the highly-anticipated Avengers: Endgame in April, so we've been impatiently waiting for details ever since. Let's dig into the exciting sequel news ahead.

The Returning Cast

As if there was any doubt that Benedict Cumberbatch would be returning to his role as Doctor Strange, it was confirmed on Saturday, with Cumberbatch appearing on stage along with director, Scott Derrickson. It was also announced that Elizabeth Olsen would be reprising her MCU role of Scarlett Witch for the sequel (though it will be her first time in a Doctor Strange movie), with the events from the series WandaVision (also announced at Comic-Con) tying directly into this film. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Rachel McAdams is as good as locked in for a return as his love interest, Dr. Christine Palmer. Benedict Wong will also return as Strange's sidekick, Wong!

The Director

Scott Derrickson, who wrote and directed 2016's initial entry, will be returning for the sequel, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness. At Comic-Con on the weekend, Derrickson told the crowd in Hall H that he wanted to make "the first scary MCU film" and since he comes from a horror movie background, this is hardly surprising. Cumberbatch also confirmed the film would take "a crazy line into horror," while maintaining the signature Marvel humor. It hasn't been confirmed whether he will be writing the script this time around, as Marvel is reportedly shopping around for a screenwriter.
