Grey's Anatomy Cast Quotes About the Show Ending

Here's Every Shred of Information We Have on Grey's Anatomy's Ending

Grey's Anatomy has gone on for a long time. Like, record-shattering long. In April, fans learned that the hit show was getting renewed for a 15th season, making it the longest-running primetime drama on ABC and tying it with ER for the longest-running medical drama on television. But like all good things, Grey's Anatomy will eventually come to an end.

It looks like the ultimate series finale is inching toward us by the day, likely sometime during the next few years given recent comments made by Ellen Pompeo, the actress who plays Meredith Grey — and Pompeo certainly isn't the only person to chat about the show's ending. In the past year, Shonda Rhimes, the show's iconic creator, and Debbie Allen, the actress who portrays Catherine Avery, also shared their thoughts about Grey's Anatomy's eventual conclusion.

Here are all of the quotes out there about our beloved medical drama's end, from words of reassurance about the drama's current network clout to post-Grey's plans.

Ellen Pompeo: actress, producer, and director

  • On the likelihood of Grey's ending and what the show has taught her: "We're getting there. Shonda and I will make that decision together. I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work. Like any marriage, friendship, you gotta put in the work. You have to accept other people's flaws and accept your own flaws and try to change and be a better person. But I think everything is worth the time and effort. And things get better."
  • On what's keeping the show around: "The show's a tremendous moneymaker, let's be honest. It makes a fortune for everybody, and everyone wants to keep it going. Now, it's sort of fun. We're in a contest with ourselves. How long can we keep this going and still have this level of quality?"
  • On whether or not Meredith will meet a tragic fate: "I don't know. I know I'm going to survive because there's no show without me, so I never worry how I'm going to survive this. I guess I just worry if the audience will like it."
  • On eventually leaving to be more involved with her kids' lives: "I want to be more involved in my kids' lives as they get older. And they need me more, and this world is such a crazy place."
  • On her plans after Grey's: "I am really into producing. I love producing. It's like one problem after another; it's problem-solving 101. It's like a great experiment in problem-solving. Acting is . . . it's a young girl's game. You've gotta travel, you've gotta be away. [You've] gotta go here and work at night in the rain. I'm not saying I'll never do it. If there's an amazing opportunity, I'm sure, of course I'll do it."

Debbie Allen: actress, executive producer, and director

  • On why she doesn't think the iconic show will end anytime soon: "I don't see that right now. The train is so strong, and the audience is so committed. It's so global. Grey's Anatomy has a huge audience that is brand new. We've had a whole new audience the last couple of years of 13- or 14-year-olds that started from season one and are now our biggest fans."

Shonda Rhimes: creator, writer, and executive producer

  • On her pact with Pompeo: "Ellen and I have a pact that I'm going to do the show as long as she's going to do the show. So the show will exist as long as both of us want to do it. If she wants to stop, we're stopping. So I don't know if we'll see 600, but I want to keep it feeling fresh. As long as there are fresh stories to tell and as long as we're both excited about the stories being told, we're in. So, we'll see where that takes us."
  • On the ending: "You know, I don't think about it with an ending. There's no ending in mind anymore. I used to have all of these endings planned, but we passed one of them in season three and one of them in season five and one of them in season eight, so I've given up. I've given up planning endings."
