Riverdale Season 3 Theories

6 Riverdale Theories So Crazy, They Might Come True

Riverdale's season two finale left us with plenty of answers (including the identity of the second Black Hood), but a ton of questions too (Archie can't really go to jail, can he?). No one ever expects a season in Riverdale to be quiet, and the off-season hasn't exactly been quiet either. Fans have been speculating up a storm on everything, and I do mean everything. Characters who might be dead? Check. Possible secret identities? Of course. More twisted family relationships? Come on, it's Riverdale.

While we wait for more teasers from the upcoming third season, what else are we to do except read into every little detail? Read on for some of our favourite theories — from the mostly plausible to the deliciously absurd — about what we might see when Riverdale returns this Fall.

1. Chic Survives

Rule number one of television: if you don't see the body, they're not dead. (And even if you do, you might be wrong.) The last time viewers saw Chic, he is fleeing after Betty hands him to the Black Hood — and just when we thought his body had been found, it turns out to not be him. Any savvy TV viewer knows that a character's absence can mean just as much as their presence, so we're pretty sure Chic is still out there somewhere.

2. The Whole Series Is Jughead's Story

Characters narrating a show is pretty popular these days, but it almost always leads to the question of whether or not it's just a fun storytelling device or actually significant. For instance, the most recent season of Jane the Virgin reveals that the series narrator not only knows things that are going to happen, but that the whole series is "based" on the main character's books. Similarly, it's not a stretch to imagine that Jughead is more than just a narrator — he's controlling the narrative we see, with ramifications we have yet to fully understand.

3. Betty's Mom Is Not . . . Betty's Mom

Penny Peabody has been the centre of so many fan theories, but this one seems to be the most popular by far. Started by a fan on Reddit, the theory suggests that Penny is actually the sister of Alice Cooper and also secretly Betty's biological mom. This would explain her seeming resentment towards Betty, as well as her reluctance to off Jughead when the opportunity arises (maybe she didn't want to hurt her daughter). This one's a bit far-fetched, but on Riverdale, nothing is too far-fetched to happen!

4. Archie and Veronica Will Break Up

Archie and Veronica end season two in a pretty good place — and naturally, that can't last for long, especially on a high-drama soap like Riverdale. We're guessing the strain of the latest twists and turns takes its toll on their relationship and that they'll hit the rocks sometime in the first half of season 3. Camila Mendes seemed to even hint at this during Comic-Con, suggesting that the couple might have some struggles and even another love interest entering the picture.

5. The Coopers Are in a Cult

The creepiest part of the Riverdale season three trailer? That one shot where it looks like Polly and Alice are holding up Polly's babies in front of a bunch of white-clad people and a fire — that seemed pretty cult-like to me! It would also tie in with Polly's mentions of the mysterious "farm" late in season two. It could be anything from a satanic cult to a doomsday one, or some other brand of creepy, but the one thing that's for sure is that, whoever they are, they're going to spell trouble for our heroes.

6. Charles Smith Is Alive

What is it with these Coopers? After Chic reveals that he was not, in fact, Betty's long-lost half-brother, he claims that the real Charles had died of an overdose. Yet again: if we don't see a body, we don't believe he's dead. And as a bonus, since we don't know what he would have grown up to look like, he could be literally anyone we have already met or will meet in the future. Charles seems like too important a character to throw away on an offscreen death, so we're pretty sure he'll be showing up when we least expect it.
