This Is Us Season 2 Finale Recap

5 Major Plots to Brush Up on Before This Is Us Returns For Season 3

With season three of This Is Us almost upon us — Sept. 25 can't come soon enough! — it's time to relive that emotional roller coaster of the season two finale. Here's a refresher on the (harrowing, emotional, upsetting, and sometimes, but very rarely, happy) events that went down for the Pearson clan at the end of season two.

1. Kate and Toby Get a Happily Ever After

After breaking up, suffering a miscarriage, and experiencing a bunch of other obstacles over the last two seasons, there's finally good news for Kate and Toby: They get married! (Of course this, too, happens despite Toby's parents expressing concerns to the groom, and Kate's own wedding-day nerves.)

2. We Meet Old Jack

We finally get to see Old Jack — and yes, he's still dreamy. Kate has a recurring dream that the Pearsons are all up at the cabin for a wedding, but this time, it's for Jack and Rebecca's vow renewal on their 40th wedding anniversary. Ah, what could have been.

3. The Pearson Clan Makes Peace With Jack's Death

Since we finally know how Jack dies — Note to self: get rid of Crock-Pot — the season two finale spends a lot of time focusing on the family's efforts to emotionally heal from Jack's untimely death. On her wedding day, Kate breaks away from the family to find a spot in the woods she frequented with her dad to say a final goodbye. "Dad, I'm getting married today. And I've got to make room for Toby, so I've got to let go a little now."

Kevin makes a toast during the wedding in which he tells Kate, Randall, and Rebecca to take a deep breath to let go of all the Jack-related feelings they've held on to for decades.

4. Deja Gets Angry

Since her mother asked to be stripped of all parental rights, Deja has been increasingly angry and mean — and Randall and Beth aren't sure what to do. But we meet Beth's cousin, Zoe (who is also the wedding photographer), who swoops in to tell Deja her own sad story (her mom left her with Beth's family when she was a little kid and never came back). The story makes Deja attend the wedding.

5. Time Jumps

In a crazy trick for the series, time skips one year to the future during the finale. In it, we see Kevin jet off to Vietnam with new girlfriend, Zoe. During the same period, Toby is languished in bed, appearing to be suffering deeply once again from depression. If that's not enough, then the Pearsons jump ahead two decades, where we see Future Randall telling Future Tess that it's time to go see "her," and Tess replying that she doesn't feel ready.

So are we about to see something terrible happen to Beth? Are we about to see poor Toby fall into a deep depression? Are we going to see Kevin have a new love story? And can we finally see how Miguel and Rebecca get together?

OK, This Is Us, bring on season three.
