What Movies Will Be on Disney Plus?

Confused About Which Movies Will Be on Disney Plus? Here's a Handy Guide

Disney's upcoming streaming platform, Disney+, is coming straight out of the gate with a veritable treasure trove of exciting content to lure you over from Netflix and Hulu. In addition to TV shows about Marvel favourites like Loki and Falcon, the service is adding some exclusive movies to its ever-growing list of titles. Some of them will be old favourites — Disney's entire catalogue — while others will be fresh from the studio. If you're wondering when, exactly, you'll be able to check them out, keep reading.

The Lady and the Tramp Reboot

The pups of Lady and the Tramp are finding love once again, and the best part is, you don't have to dust off those old VHS tapes to experience it! The Hollywood Reporter shared in March 2018 that Disney is rebooting the Lady and the Tramp love story of our childhood in a live-action remake.

Charlie Bean will direct the live-action-CGI hybrid reboot of the 1955 classic movie following the success of his Lego Ninjago Movie, while Tessa Thompson stars as Lady and Justin Theroux as Tramp. The film will be available on the first day of the streaming service's launch on Nov. 12, 2019.

Stargirl

Jerry Spinelli's beloved 2000 novel about a quirky young girl's journey through her uptight new high school is being adapted for the big screen (well, technically the small screen since it's Disney+, right?). Musician Grace VanderWaal is playing the titular character with Julia Hart directing and Kristin Hahn penning the script. Filming took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and it's expected to arrive at some point in 2020.

Noelle

Director Marc Lawrence's Christmas movie Noelle was originally slated to premiere in theatres, but now it will be making its festive debut on Disney+. The film follows Santa's daughter, Nicole Claus (played by Pitch Perfect alum Anna Kendrick), who's sent on a mission to track down her brother Nick when he disappears before she can take on the family business. Bill Hader, Billy Eichner, and Shirley MacLaine will costar in the film, which has a tentative release date of Winter 2019.

Togo

Are you ready to be inspired? Because based-on-a-true-story Togo seems to promise just that. The upcoming drama directed by Ericson Core and starring Willem Dafoe is described as following "two key figures in the 1925 serum run to Nome, also known as the Great Race of Mercy, in which dog-sled teams relayed to transport diphtheria antitoxin serum through harsh conditions over nearly 700 miles to save the Alaskan town of Nome from an epidemic."

Dafoe will play Leonhard Seppala, the owner of sled dog Togo, who together traversed the most dangerous part of their journey (which included enduring temperatures of 30 degrees below zero in gale-force winds). The studio hasn't announced a release date as of May 2019, but we'll keep an eye out for you.

Timmy Failure

Tom McCarthy is at the helm of this family-friendly adventure film adapted from the kids' books of the same name. Disney Channel alum Winslow Fegley will star as an 11-year old boy who runs a detective agency, Total Failures, in town with the help of his best friend (who just so happens to be an imaginary 1,200 pound polar bear). Craig Robinson and Ophelia Lovibond will costar. A release date is still TBD, but Disney revealed in a tweet that it will premiere within the first year of Disney+'s launch.

Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Other Marvel Films

Well, we all knew this day would come: Disney is going to start holding its Marvel titles back from Netflix starting with Captain Marvel. The studio will now reserve MCU films for its own streaming platform, which makes sense considering it will also house Marvel TV series. Captain Marvel will be available on Disney+ the day the streaming service launches (Nov. 12), and we can expect other MCU movies to trickle in not long after that.

All the Star Wars Films

All of the films in the Star Wars franchise — yes, all of them! — will roll out within the first year that Disney+ launches. That means everything from Star Wars: The Last Jedi to all those prequels you wish never existed in the first place will be available for repeat viewings.

Bo Peep and Forky's Brand-New Toy Story 4 Shorts

Toy Story 4 will open in theatres on June 21, but that won't be the last glimpse of the characters you'll have. When the service launches in November, we'll all be treated to some shiny new Pixar shorts starring Bo Peep and Forky. Bo Peep's short film is titled Lamp Life, while Forky will appear in a series of Pixar shorts called Forky Asks a Question. As for the movie itself, you can expect it to premiere on Disney+ within the first year of the service's launch.

Zetus-Lapetus Cetus-Lupeedus! In addition to over 5,000 episodes of popular Disney Channel shows, Disney+ will have 100 Disney Channel Original Movies available to stream the day Disney+ launches. (Yep, that includes Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century!)

Aladdin, Frozen 2, and Other New Releases

Like the MCU films, Disney+ will be the exclusive streaming home of all Walt Disney Studios releases beginning in 2019. That means the live-action Aladdin and The Lion King reboots will eventually find a home there (likely in 2020), as well as Frozen 2 and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

The New Mutants (Maybe)

There's a chance that director Josh Boone's The New Mutants, a horror film set in the X-Men universe, could land on Disney+. The film has been plagued by delays and reshoots, moving release dates multiple times (it was originally set to hit theatres in April 2018, then pushed to February 2019, and now it's at August 2). Given how tumultuous the journey to getting it to the big screen has been, no wonder rumours are swirling about it premiering on Disney+.
