Listen to the Best New Music For May 2021 in the UK Scene

All the New Music We've Added to Our Playlists in May

With the fifth month of 2021 comes the promise of freedom and a slew of new music to accompany it. As warmer weather is on its way, and we're finally allowed to eat food that we didn't cook ourselves, we're beginning to feel more hopeful and optimistic about the future, and frankly, it's about time. While we might not be getting back to total normality just yet, we are still finding new ways to get through — with listening to great new music being one of them.

With so many songs set to be released this month (and this year, undoubtedly), it can be hard to keep track of who's doing what. Well, that's where we come in. Every month, we round up the best of the best tracks from the UK music scene, new and old. Whether it's another one of Kara Marni's garage ballads or a hauntingly beautiful tune from Jorja Smith, we've got the songs to see you through this new month.

Just a few days into May, we've heard Jessie Ware's deluxe album, a brand-new record from Olivia Dean, and a groundbreaking new video from Little Mix, with new music from Beka still on the way.

"Your Power" is Eilish's latest single, and it's a powerful one. A little slower than previous releases, it's a chilling ballad about sexual abuse, coercion, and control by those in power.

A brand-new single from the deluxe edition of Ware's latest album, What's Your Pleasure?, "Please" is the ultimate upbeat disco track for all your happy days. "'Please' is full of optimism and ready to be played in a place where we can all be together and flirt, dance, touch, and kiss," Ware said in a press release. "A wonderful excuse not to stop the party from ending."

A classic Little Mix banger, "Confetti" marks the band's first release since Jesy Nelson officially announced that she was leaving. Accompanied by a hilarious video that features a cheeky cameo from Drag Race UK stars A'Whora, Tayce, and Bimini Bon Boulash, it's a definite yes from us.

Miley Cyrus jumped onto a new version of "Without You" by The Kid Laroi, and until we heard it, we didn't think the song could get any better (it could). The latest offering features Cyrus's sultry voice, which adds a whole new dimension to the track.

A sassy pop anthem from newcomer Phoebe Green, "IDK" is basically the song that says what everyone is already thinking. Dripping in '70s nostalgia, the video gives us serious style inspiration, and the song is pretty catchy too.

"Twisted Fantasy" is the latest release from Kara Marni, and it shows off her glorious vocals in the best way possible. Accompanied by a funky lo-fi video filled with Marni's family and friends, the song is a vibrant garage-inspired track paired with twinkly instrumentals.

After "Bad Girl", the Daya track that we were obsessed with in February, her latest release, "Montana", is an immediate winner in our books. It's a dreamy rendition with soulful vocals and totally mellow vibes.

Shay Lia is definitely one to watch if you're a fan of Kali Uchis, SZA, or Nao. Her latest release, "Irrational", features an unexpected sample of "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior, but with her own R&B twist.

"Need a Word With Cupid" is exactly the type of song you'll find yourself singing in the shower after an argument with a loved one, and that's exactly why we love it. It's a poppy self-love anthem about empowerment, trusting yourself, and believing that you're the sh*t, and we're here for it.

"Cherry Bomb" is the perfect song for fans of Rex Orange County, Tom Grennan, and Zak Abel. Askew's distinctive vocals are paired with a fun, up-tempo melody. Honestly, you'll find yourself singing along to the lyrics after hearing it even just once.

"I'd Rather Die Than Be Deported" is a trap-infused song by rapper Berwyn. Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, the artist moved to London at age 9, and has pretty much been making music ever since. It helps that his dad used to be a DJ, which, as Berwyn wrote in his Spotify bio, meant that he "grew up on that good sh*t". A bold claim indeed.

Anything Jorja Smith touches turns to gold, and her latest release, "Gone", is no exception. It's a more sombre track than her previous release, "Addicted", but still features Smith's signature vocals and a powerful message.

Olivia Rodrigo is a name that everyone is familiar with right now, thanks to her previous release "driver's license", but I'm inclined to believe that her current single "good 4 u" is even better. Lyrically, it feels familiar to the likes of Paramore and Avril Lavigne, but with a video inspired by teen classic, Jennifer's Body.

Laura Mvula is back, and this time with an '80s inspired track that'll have you dancing in your living room in no time. It's funky, it's fresh, and it comes with a wavy visualiser that only makes us love the song more.

Jorja Smith is on fire right now. After the release of "Addicted" and "Gone", she's back for more. Her newest release, "Bussdown", sees Smith dressed as a mechanic and partnering with South Londer rapper Shay bo for a musical extravaganza.

After *that* iconic BRITs performance, it only makes sense to add Kurupt FM and Craig David's latest collaboration to our May playlist. In typical Craig David fashion, the song is a garage bop, with hilarious comments from Brentford's hottest band.

"Forgot About" marks a different era for Swiss-Tamil artist Priya Ragu. It's a much more sombre tune, essentially about having a really special bond with someone that you still think about, and wonder if they do. It's a dreamy ballad with glorious vocals, and definitely one for your current Spotify playlist.

We never tire of hearing new music from Greentea Peng, and her latest release, "Dingaling" is no exception. A self-confident and soulful song, the track comes in anticipation of Peng's upcoming album, Man Made which is set for release on 4 June.

At just 18 years old, Indian-American artist KOAD is about to release his second mixtape and has collaborated with Kwes Darko, slowthai's closest collaborator and partner. His latest release, "jaunty" is exactly that. Lively, confident, and experimental, the track fuses a rock sample from singer-songwriter James Talley with twinkly Indian instruments, in a perfect concoction.

One for fans of Luke Sital-Singh, Nick Mulvey, and Vance Joy, Waiting For Smith is a folk pop singer/songwriter named Harry Lloyd. The song, "Hopelessness of Love", is essentially about the inevitable difficult moments that people face in relationships, and hopes to encourage listeners to push through the tough times.

Chippy Nonstop is one of the most exciting new artists around, and there's a few reasons for that. A producer, vocalist, and DJ, she's also a co-founder of an educational collective named Intersession, which aims to inspire the next generation of queer and POC talent through skills workshops and advice on DJ-ing and music production. Her latest track, "To Myself", is one of her more subtle offerings, and features a lo-fi mix in collaboration with DJ Genderfluid.

Everyone (and I mean everyone) was patiently awaiting the release of Anne-Marie and Niall Horan's collaboration and now that it's here, we can see that it was worth the wait. It's a super catchy ballad that is accompanied by a gloriously vintage video, and already we've had it stuck in our heads for days.
