Is Anne With an E Cancelled on Netflix?

Say Goodbye to Green Gables — Anne With an E Will End With Season 3 on Netflix

Netflix's Anne With an E has run out of kindred spirits. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama will conclude with season three. On Nov. 24, the season three finale (now, retroactively, a series finale) aired on Canada's CBC, which gets the airing rights before the rest of the world; in all other markets, it's available as a Netflix exclusive. The third and final season will debut on Netflix early in 2020. It's the latest in a long line of shows that, infamously, are cancelled by Netflix after completing a three-season run.

"We've been thrilled to bring the quintessentially Canadian story of Anne With an E to viewers around the world," CBC and Netflix said in a joint statement, as per THR. "We're thankful to producers Moira Walley-Beckett and Miranda de Pencier and to the talented cast and crew for their incredible work in sharing Anne's story with a new generation. We hope fans of the show love this final season as much as we do, and that it brings a satisfying conclusion to Anne's journey."

Series creator Walley-Beckett, meanwhile, shared the news with fans in an emotional Instagram post. "I wish it could be different but it cannot. We have reached the end of the red Green Gables road after 3 wonderful seasons. My heart is heavy but I am so proud of this show - proud of my talented cast, crew, writers, and directors for working together so passionately to bring my vision of #annewithane to life. I am grateful and humbled by this experience and I truly feel blessed to have had the opportunity to share this beautiful, meaningful story with all of you, my kindred spirits. I know you have loved this series as much as I have and I thank you for that forever and a day."

Anne With an E is a retelling of the classic Anne of Green Gables novels, focusing on the coming of age of imaginative orphan Anne Shirley (played by Amybeth McNulty), who is taken in by elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Anne immerses herself in the small town of Avonlea, befriends the wealthy Diana Barry, and begins a complicated rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe. It initially began its run on CBC in 2017 before its Netflix debut in early 2018. Fans outside of Canada can catch the third and final season, which covers the end of Anne and company's school and teenage years, on Netflix beginning on Jan. 3, 2020!
