Throughout season one, Tony is seen as an ally to Clay, and someone who appears to get along with everyone while staying just outside of the school's drama. He is the person that Hannah trusted with her tapes, and he takes her final wishes so seriously that he's initially against the idea of going to the police or to her parents. Instead, he offers his unwavering support to Clay, and protects him from the other students whenever he can.
Ultimately, Tony begins to agree with Clay that it's better to find some justice for Hannah than it is to blindly follow her instructions to pass the tapes from student to student. At the end of the season, he copies all of the tapes over to a USB drive and gives them to Hannah's parents.
