The chameleon-like actor steps into the role of antagonist as Dr. James K. Mantleray, a vaguely creepy scientist who seems to be covering up the truth behind the pharmaceutical trial and the drug's real side effects and purpose. Theroux has had a pretty varied career, from slapstick comedy to TV thrillers and everything in between, although Maniac appears to be his first real villainous role.
