Gendry has survived more incidences that should have resulted in his death far too many times for people not to speculate that he might play a bigger role than we had suspected. Fans have also noted that he might have a more complicated past than we know about. Gendry becoming king would be a wild twist, but it definitely wouldn't be a completely unreasonable one.
