As Randall makes his way into the room to see Rebecca, it becomes clear that she doesn't necessarily know who he is. As he greets her he says, "It's Randall," before emphasising, "Your son Randall." While talking with The Hollywood Reporter, the show's creator Dan Fogelman didn't necessarily confirm or deny that Rebecca has Alzheimer's or dementia. "I think there's a lot of ways it could be read right now," he explained. "I think that clearly Randall's introducing himself and something seems vacant there. But it's also been a bit of time, and this could be just kind of a different form of ageing or something else. I think that that's not an unexpected possible read of it, if that makes any sense."
