Since the moment Maggie and Gary first meet in their breast cancer support group, cancer has been a central component in their relationship. With Maggie in remission, she and Gary will have to reconsider whether — now that forever is farther away than they had once imagined it to be — they still feel the same way. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nash explained that, in this new season, the two of them will face the challenge of figuring out who they are independent of cancer. " . . . now cancer is gone and the whole way [Maggie and Gary have] known each other has been cancer," he explained. "And as Maggie says in the finale, you've got to be careful that you're not doing the same thing Jon did and trying to save me in the way that you couldn't save Jon."
