New details about "Secret Invasion" were revealed at San Diego Comic-Con [1] on 23 July, with Cobie Smulders [2] prefacing the trailer by warning the audience that the Disney+ miniseries is going to be "a darker show." According to Entertainment Weekly [3], she told the audience, "We're going to get deeper into the characters, and it's an exciting thriller. You never know if someone is Skrull or human." The trailer has not yet been released to the public, but according to those who were there, the series promises to be an action-packed and mind-bending ride.
"Secret Invasion" is part of Marvel's Phase 5, which also includes "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," [4] "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," [5] "Daredevil: Born Again," [6] and "Captain America: New World Order." It will be directed by Thomas Bezucha, known for "Let Him Go" starring Kevin Costner [7], and Ali Selim, whose résumé includes "The Looming Tower," "Condor," and "Manhunt." Jackson [10] returning to portray Nick Fury, former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., or the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. It also stars Ben Mendelsohn [11] as Talos, the leader of a Skrull sect; Smulders as Maria Hill, an ally of Fury; Martin Freeman [12] as CIA agent Everett K. According to Collider [18], the trailer starts out with Fury returning to Earth and meeting Smulders' character, who has apparently been trying to reach him for years, in a bar. Fury says that there was "an issue that needed his attention" and required him to return, per the outlet.
From there, the trailer veers into an intense montage. At one point, Colman reportedly warns Fury that he is "in no shape for this," according to Deadline [19]. In another shot, Fury sits next to Cheadle's James Rhodes [20], who ominously asks, "How much do you know about your security detail?"
