Queen Maxima of the Netherlands Fashion

Meet the Royal Fashion Force Who's About to Take the UK by Storm

When it comes to modern royal fashion icons, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands doesn't get nearly as many mentions as our favourite British duchesses, Kate and Meghan, but this consort is a style force to be reckoned with. And pretty soon, Maxima's standout choices will get plenty of attention as she arrives in London for a State Visit. Her knockout wardrobe will undoubtedly make front pages everywhere.

Since marrying into the Dutch Royal Family back in 2002, Maxima Zorreguieta, has created her very own sense of royal style. Whether it's daily royal engagements or glittering gala events, this is one consort who knows just what she likes. And we all love it, too.

Maxima rarely puts a fashion foot wrong. Whether it's high profile hats or regal takes on the latest trends, the Queen of the Netherlands always lands a knockout style punch. And let's not even start on the jewels — she may not have started life as a royal, but Maxima was born to wear a tiara.

With the Dutch State Visit to the UK starting on Oct. 23, get your royal style homework done now, and revel in some of Queen Maxima's many style triumphs.

The Queen Who Wears the Trousers

Maxima wowed everyone in this red jumpsuit by Valentino worn to an AIDS benefit event in May 2018.

Seventies Style

Maxima's take on '70s style is so now, it hurts. This bold print jumpsuit with suede belt also features long sleeves and a bit of a flare on those trousers.

Floral Prints

This Autumn's trend for floral prints is already a big part of Maxima's wardrobe. She wore this '50s style skirt with a fuchsia fitted top on a visit to a harbour, because Maxima does boats in high heels.

Floral Fabulousness

Maxima can't get enough of this white fitted dress with its bright flower print across the middle and arms. She wore it to the W20 Women's Empowerment Conference in Berlin last year and again for a visit by the President of Mexico to the Netherlands this Spring.

Monochrome Petals

The trend for darker florals also has a home in Maxima's style selection. This vintage style dress with flared skirt and sleeveless top is topped with a signature hat.

Animal Prints

We're all craving animal prints this Autumn, and Queen Maxima already has a whole section of her wardrobe packed out with the patterns. This two-piece jacket suit with belt detail and turned back cuffs was her pick for a visit to a social employment agency.

On Trend Pastels

Expect to see a lot of designer Natan during Maxima's stay in the UK. It's a go-to label for the Queen of the Netherlands, who opted for this pale blue creation with flounce neckline and draping for an event earlier this Summer.

All the Autumn Colours

Queen Maxima hit all the fashion notes in this brown and blue combination by Jan Taminiau during a visit to China earlier in 2018.

Paris Chic

The House of Windsor has been warned — Maxima always brings her A game to the first day of a State Visit. This coat dress, with giant pockets and structured bodice, caused quite the stir as Maxima arrived in Paris in 2016.

Yes to Yellow

It's one of Autumn's big colours, and Maxima can't get enough of it. One of her standout Summer yellow picks was this knee-length dress with full sleeves and shoulder details by her go-to designer, Natan, worn at the start of her State Visit to Luxembourg in May.

Pale and Interesting

Maxima mixed yellow with the palest pink for this unusual two-piece outfit with three-quarter sleeves, from favourite designer Natan, for a community celebration last Summer.

Queen of Hats

Queen Maxima is a rarity among modern royal style icons as she's made hats a go-to part of her wardrobe, and we love her all the more for it. This spectacular statement of chic was seen at the royal wedding of Prince Guillaume and Princess Stephanie of Luxembourg in 2012.

Turban-tastic

Throughout her 16 years as one of the best known royals on the continent, Queen Maxima has made the turban her own. This sunshine yellow version was worn for D-Day commemorations in 2014 when Maxima was all smiles with Barack Obama.

Quirky and Cute

Another favourite style is the fedora, which Maxima tends to favour in the Autumn. We could well get another look at this red version, seen in 2014 and several times since.

Brimming Over With Style

Maxima loves hats with huge brims, and they don't come any bigger than this burgundy design from Fabienne Delvigne, seen here at a museum opening in 2015.

Fun With Feathers

This is one royal who doesn't shy away from hats most of us would find hard to wear. This flounce of feathers turned out to be the crowning glory of Maxima's look for a visit to Rome.

Pops of Colour

Queen Maxima shows her love of bright colours in this straw saucer hat, topped with blue, pink, and orange feathers, worn in May 2015.

Pinned Down Look

As well as huge brims and bright colours, channelled in this Fabienne Delvigne creation worn for King's Day celebrations in 2015, Maxima is bringing back the hat pin, which is handy considering how windy it can be in London during the Autumn.

Turned Back Brims

Maxima's trademark turned back brim is featured on one of her most recent hat picks, this beige straw creation by Fabienne Delvigne worn to a medal presentation in August 2018.

Statement Sleeves

It's a trend no one is ready to give up on yet. Maxima chose statement sleeves for an appearance in August 2018. The fitted dress is by Edouard Vermeulen for Natan.

Handbag Heaven

Keep an eye out for Maxima's clutches, as she's known for her ability to lift an outfit with a standout bag — seen here with another favourite, rather regal gloves in contrasting shades.

Going Green

Maxima does love a shade of green, and this silk dress by Natan with clever pleats and midlength sleeves has become a favourite since its debut in Dordrecht in 2017.

Red Is Her Colour

Maxima opted for her favourite red on a visit to Hamburg in March 2015 when she added a cape to her fitted dress with three-quarter-length sleeves and matching turban style hat.

Standout Accessories

Maxima loves an accessory or three, and they bring plenty more personality to her standout style. That red outfit from her Germany tour featured this dazzler of a brooch.

The Long Lost Tiara

We know the State Visit will include a tiara-tastic dinner at Buckingham Palace, and Maxima got lots of people very excited indeed when she wore a tiara not seen for four decades earlier this year. The Stuart Tiara is a wall of diamonds that comes with lots of matching sparkle, including that bow brooch, and when Maxima wore it to a State Dinner in Luxembourg in May this year, it became a hot favourite for a London appearance too.

Tiaras and Sparkle

Another possible pick for the State Dinner is this all-diamond tiara chosen by Maxima for a trip to New Zealand in 2016 when it was worn with an asymmetrical evening gown by Claes Iversen.

Dazzling Diamonds

State Visits usually include at least two tiara events, and Maxima has a go to for a more scaled back gala dinner in this diamond bandeau tiara, which she has made her own. It was originally a necklace given to the last woman to be queen consort of the Netherlands before Maxima, and it contains over 100 carats of diamonds.

Pretty in Pearls

We know royal women tend to coordinate their looks behind the scenes, so if Elizabeth II opts for pearls for the State Dinner, we could well see Maxima in this tiara, which has been part of her family's collection for over a century.

Sensational Sapphires

One of the Dutch royal family's star tiaras is this sapphire creation, worn by royal women for over 100 years. Maxima chose it for the ceremony where her husband was sworn in as king back in April 2013.

Rubies Are Red

The Dutch royals also have a stunning selection of rubies, and Maxima chose this tiara with necklace and earrings, by jeweler Mellerio, for the royal wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden in June 2015.

Valentino Queen

He designed her wedding dress, so it's no wonder Maxima is such a fan of Valentino. He's also behind this red evening look worn several times by the Dutch queen, most recently on a State Visit to Luxembourg in May 2018.

Gala Gown Fit for a Queen

Maxima chose a lilac evening gown with intricate gold embellishments and floral embroidery created by Jan Taminiau for her husband's 50th birthday celebrations in 2017.

Maximum Accessories For Maxima

Maxima added some standout drop earrings to her look for her husband's birthday celebrations.

Sparkling in the Snow

Maxima wore a gold dress with blue lace overlay by Claes Iversen to the 80th birthday celebrations for King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, held in Oslo in May 2018.

Trouser Suit Chic

Maxima chose a red trouser suit for a speech at the United Nations in New York in September 2017.

Queen of Denim

Proving dressing down is just as easy as dressing up, Queen Maxima looked effortlessly chic in this shirt dress chosen for the annual royal Summer photo call at Wassenaar in July 2018.

Orange Is the New Black

Her husband is head of the House of Orange, meaning Maxima has had to make this hard-to-wear shade her own. She did just that in a basket weave dress when she met the Queen at Windsor in July 2013.
