Best Celebrity Couples' Style of 2021

2021's Triumphant Return of Celebrity Couple Dressing

From Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, we're going to come right out and say it: 2021 had some of the best celebrity couple fashion moments of all time. Matching couples' fashion is important for a celebrity duo to nail (both the real-love relationships and the ones just for publicity), because it demonstrates a visual connection between two people. Each coordinating couture moment highlights a cohesion between a famous duo, a shared aesthetic that reminds you "we're rich, we're hot, and we're in love".

These sartorial matchy-matchy moments are non-verbal signals that they're status is "together," an aesthetic celebration of a harmonious union and a way to build the new couple's synergised brand (#couplegoals). As we look back at 2021, here are some of the famous couples who won fashion.

Sarah Brady and Jonah Hill

Sarah Brady and Jonah Hill are the most literal matching couples on our list. They skipped right over "coordinating" and went full speed to "head to toe matching".

It wouldn't work on a couple even slightly less adorable, but Jonah & Sarah are so cute that everyone in the world got together and collectively agreed that we only want to see them wear matching 'fits from now on. From their self-described "glam space twins" aesthetic at the premiere of "Don't Look Up" in Gucci, to their matching emerald green sweatsuits, I don't ever want it to stop. Sarah is self-aware of their twinning, of course, writing on her Instagram, "We're that annoying mushy gushy couple that wears matching outfits all the time cause we think we're cute together 👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏼 #sorrynotsorry 🤷🏼‍♀️". That's where you're wrong, Sarah: I don't ever want it to stop.

Dua Lipa and Anwar Hadid

Congrats to Dua Lipa and Anwar Hadid for being young, hot, in love, and winning the street style game in 2021. While she loves bright, bold, and sexy, and he loves a luxe-grunge vibe, the pair's aesthetic combines to final form into "effortlessly cool with a '90s filter". The transatlantic couple looks great on the red carpet and front row at fashion week, but their couples style really blossoms when they hit the sidewalk.

Zendaya and Tom Holland

Oh, to be as cool as Zendaya and Tom Holland.

Zendaya is already a certified fashion icon (literally) and she's pulling her new sweetheart into her couture stratosphere. With each new red carpet and press interview, Holland's outfits become better tailored and more interesting—an upgrade we can only assume is Zendaya and her genius stylist Law Roach's influence. In the past, Holland has favoured jeans and sneakers for his red carpet moments, but now he's appearing in cool suiting, leather jackets, and subtle patterns.

Since they're a brand new (at least to the public) couple, there's no telling how their combined aesthetic will evolve, but I can't wait to see what they wear at next year's Met Gala.

Bennifer 2.0

Serious question: Did we all collectively summon Bennifer 2.0 into existence with our devotion to the Y2K style reboot? Did we go over the maximum allowed global capacity for bucket hats and shifted the energy of the universe enough to bring back the most famous, early aughts couple?

If so, great job everybody because Bennifer is back!

While the original Bennifer had excellent style, the sequel has evolved. They've matured as people and as a couple, so have their clothes. Still sexy, still luxurious, but the pair looks (somehow) even better now in their black tie and plunging gowns.

All I want for Christmas is a pic of Bennifer 2.0 in matching pajamas on Christmas morning while they unwrap presents.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

I desperately need about 1,000% more of this couple in my life. Please sign my petition to make Rihanna and A$AP Rocky as overexposed as Travis and Kourt.

Since we don't get too much of this couple, they really make every public facing moment a Moment. At this year's Met Ball, for example, Rihanna wore a giant, couture parka (with a casual 267 carats worth of diamonds) and A$AP Rocky matched her with a colourful, handmade quilt artfully arranged over his tux. While filming a music video in the Bronx, the couture couple wore neon fur, dark denim, and a leather-and-shearling. Their combined style aesthetic matches their couples vibe perfectly: super luxe, super fun, and never boring.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker

Fade in: It's the early '00s and I'm a teen in a sticky floored, all-ages venue mosh pit. In the future twenty-ish years from now, between the opening band and headliner, three of the punk rockers I'm watching will marry Cameron Diaz and Nicole Richie; and get engaged to Kourtney Kardashian. This makes me realise two things: (1) I'm old and (2) life is completely, utterly unpredictable.

Did anyone see Kourt and Travis coming? If you did, congratulations on your foresight and please text me some winning lottery numbers.

Even if you didn't see it coming, you have to admit this is a really fun (really hot) couple, especially as their styles solidify. Kourtney's fashion has always been sexy (she is a Kardashian, after all), but she's ditched the Calabasas vibe and is now dressing through the lens of her beau's world. She's the cool, popular girl with a Rockstar drummer boyfriend. She's still wearing Mugler and Balenciaga, but the labels are now lining vinyl pants and leather corsets. She's still carrying a Birkin, but will now pair the 5-figure bag with a Cannibal Corpse t-shirt.

Travis' style hasn't changed too much since his romance with Kourtney, which I think is a sign of how good their relationship is. She's not trying to change him into something he's not by tossing out his ripped up tees and forcing him into Gucci. In fact, she's celebrating his style by borrowing his leather jackets and adding to his tattoos. I'm very invested in this relationship's aesthetic, if only because I cannot wait to see how it culminates at their wedding.

Will the newly punk Kardashian wear a black wedding gown? It's all I'm living for in 2022!

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly

Thanks to the cloud of sex that envelops them on every red carpet they step foot on, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly have been called 2021's Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton. I know this couple is extremely divisive but, personally, I love 'em. The dyed black tongue, the chain linked fingernails, the g-string-baring naked dresses—c'mon, haters! This is pure entertainment Ms. Fox and Mr. Machine Gun are bringing us! If you can't find joy in their red carpet stunts, then that's your problem because these kids are doing the sartorial equivalent of a gold medal gymnastics routine every time they step foot on a red carpet. Unpredictable, weird, and sexy, give me it 365 days a year, pretty please.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

I know it's a cliché but they really do look like an actual fairy-tale-come-true, don't they? Romantic and refined, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have an elegant wardrobe full of tailored suiting, pretty shifts, and gorgeous gowns to coordinate perfectly.

If there's one thing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have proven this past year, it's that they have each other's backs. Their fashion choices in public appearances reflect that steadfast mutual support by presenting a united front to the world. They're always on the same wavelength and that's mirrored in their sartorial choices. Yes, the individual colours they're wearing may be different, just like Meghan and Prince Harry themselves, but their outfits are always complementary to each other. Presented together, their couple style as a whole is harmonious, just like their relationship.

Lori Harvey and Michael B. Jordan

Lori Harvey and Michael B. Jordan are such a beautiful, stylish couple it's like they beamed into 2021 from an alternate timeline where world peace has been achieved so everyone has no stress, flawless skin, great dental coverage, and tailors on-call 24/7.

When the private couple finally started appearing in public together, my group chat was captivated and spent about a week trading pictures of the ultra-in-love, ultra-gorgeous couple. Even at their most casual, their fashion is impeccable. They always manage to walk a very fine line of looking cool, without looking too flash-in-the-pan trendy. He pairs his enviable collection of Jordans with leather jackets, while she favours glittering cocktail dresses and bespoke suits—it's a match made in fashion heaven.

Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles

Harry Styles is having a great year. He's grabbed three Grammys, became a surprise style icon for his swaggering, gender fluid wardrobe, launched a beauty line, and gets to make out with Olivia Wilde every day. While the couple remains fiercely private (understandably so, thanks to the way their relationship has been bizarrely over-scrutinised and reformatted with clickbait narratives from anonymous sources), the rare public glimpses of them always make me swoon. Beyond their PDA, there are cute little sartorial cues that reinforce how smitten they are with each other. The Booksmart director wears her rockstar boyfriend's tour merch and he'll lend her his jewellery. In their casual moments, they even dress alike (pictured here in ripped jeans and vintage white tees), reinforcing how sweetly in sync the duo is.
