That reclamation is critical in an industry that often discriminates against Black people while stealing our cultural capital. Thompson told POPSUGAR that he sees this collaboration with PrettyLittleThing as a tangible step toward righting the fashion industry's wrongs. "I think it's paramount to really support people that look like us, and this is what that looks like," he said.

Anate notes, however, that there's still a long road ahead. "There's lot of work that needs to be done, but moments like this are what keep us going, and we hope that more designers get the privilege to do things like this with bigger platforms," he added.

"When the white model has done fast fashion, they get praised."

Though it was well-received among the crowd on Tuesday night, the collection hasn't been without criticism. Some fans were surprised to see Campbell collaborating with a fast-fashion brand, given the industry-wide push for sustainability.

While she recognises the overall need for improvement, Campbell finds the criticism targeted and unfair. "When the white model has done fast fashion, they get praised," she said pointedly.
