Books With the Best Sex Scenes

Hot, Bothered, and Ready to Read — These Steamy Titles Will Get You in the Mood

As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you'll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work.

Enjoying the finer things in life isn't just limited to indulging in expertly made wine and glamorous holidays; it can also include — at least for many bookworms — the art of reading a perfectly worded sex scene in a well-written book. While some might argue that TV and movies better portray these steamy encounters, avid readers know better. There's something even sexier about the descriptive language authors choose to use that make passages come to life before your eyes without any visuals at all, and if you've ever read a tantalising book, you know just what we're referring to.

To back up this theory, we asked the readers in our POPSUGAR Book Club Facebook Group what novel held their favourite sex scene, and they delivered. From well-known reads like Fifty Shades of Grey to historical fiction titles that caught readers by surprise, these books contained some of the sexiest moments of all. Read ahead to see what books were mentioned, stock your bookshelf with some seriously hot reads, and get in on the fun by joining our book-loving community here!

5. The Idea of You by Robinne Lee

"The Idea of You by Robinne Lee (£13). Experienced younger man, woman 20 years older. Hottest book I've ever read and a debut novel. Here's an example: 'He took his time. His mouth moving at the inside of my thigh again, higher, closer. His tongue teasing. And then he stopped and waited, hovering, letting me feel his breath. I didn't dare move. And at the point where I thought I could no longer bear it, he dove in . . .'"

6. Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

"I am currently reading Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert (£9). It has a scene where Red is fingering Chloe in an alley . . . Phew! I'm a lesbian and I was feeling it. I've actually appreciated all the sex scenes in this book because the author never uses cringy, romance-novel euphemisms (like his passion rod) and instead uses language that might border on crass for traditional romance readers, but I appreciated."

"Easy: Kushiel's Dart (£5), Phedre and Melisande's first time together. Hot and steamy. A book/series not for the faint hearted, it makes Fifty Shades of Grey look amateurish, and it's Fantasy (my favourite)!"

"Hands down Jack's proposal to Lady Clarice in Stephanie Laurens' A Fine Passion (£6). It is the most romantic proposal ever followed by hot celebratory loving. In fact, the entire book steams and sets you on fire, not just the lusty sex, but the intense passion and attraction that these two display for each other from the first moment Jack sees her and names her to himself as Boadicea, Warrior Queen."

16. Dirty Like Me: A Dirty Rockstar Romance by Jaine Diamond

"The steamiest scene I've ever read is 'The Pink Dress' scene in Dirty Like Me by Jaine Diamond (£13). A fake relationship fuelled by a real attraction leads to this incredibly breathtaking scene where the lines blur between fantasy and reality as Katie tries her best to fight against the magnetic pull she feels toward the rockstar she was hired to date. This one scene left me breathless and begging for more — and clothes never even came off!"

19. The Inevitable Fall of Christopher Cynster by Stephanie Laurens

"Anything by Stephanie Laurens and Lisa Kleypas for fans of historical romance! There are plenty of steamy scenes, elevated by the chemistry between the characters. I love historical romance especially because the stakes tend to be higher which heightens the drama and (sexual) tension."

— Irene Y.
