Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn's Relationship Timeline

Ed Sheeran and Wife, Cherry Seaborn, Have Taylor Swift to Thank for Their Romance

Ed Sheeran is known for his heartfelt songs about love, loss, and relationships, but has remained pretty tight-lipped about his own over the years. Yet with the upcoming release of his Disney+ documentary, titled "Ed Sheeran: The Sum Of It All", the singer is opening up about his private life, including never-before-seen footage of him with his wife, Cherry Seaborn.

The couple have actually known each other since they were just 11 years old, after they both attended Thomas Mills High School in Suffolk. While Sheeran embarked on a music career, Seaborn went to Durham university and earned a degree in molecular biology, represented England in the under-21s hockey team, and now works as a manager at prestigious accounting firm, Deloitte. The pair reconnected in 2015 and Sheeran subsequently took a break from music to focus on his relationship. "This has been the first time I've ever actually had the time to fall in love properly," he told Zane Lowe on Beats 1. "I've always got into relationships very passionately - I'm a redhead and also Irish."

Sheeran and Seaborn got married three years later and are now parents to Lyra, 2, and Jupiter, 1. Recently, he opened up about the mental health struggles he faced while writing his album, "Subtract". In a searingly honest Instagram post, he revealed, "my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth." After Jupiter arrived safely, she was able to receive treatment and is now reported to be recovering well.

While the couple keep their romance relatively private, we do have Seaborn to thank for inspiring songs like "Perfect" and "Shape of You". Read ahead to see a timeline of Sheeran and Seaborn's relationship.

July 2015: Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn Reconnect at a Fourth of July Party

Despite knowing each other since they were 11 years old, the pair went off to embark on their respective careers before reconnecting in 2015. Their first date? None other than Taylor Swift's Fourth of July party in Rhode Island. "I went on tour again, and then I went to Taylor's 4th of July party," he told People. "I was texting [Seaborn], and she was like, 'I'm in Rhode Island at a 4th of July party,' and I was like, 'So am I.' I kinda said to Taylor, 'Can I invite one of my old schoolmates?' The rest is history." He also sung about the moment in Taylor Swift's "End Game", too.

Seaborn has been working in New York for accounting firm, Deloitte, but got a transfer to London in 2016. This coincided with Sheeran taking a break from music. The couple took some time out to travel the world together.

In an Instagram post in January 2018, Sheeran revealed he had popped the question over Christmas. "Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx", he wrote alongside a cute polaroid of him kissing her cheek.

In an intimate ceremony, kept secret from the media, the couple tied the knot with just 40 of their closest friends and family in their home in Suffolk. Speaking on the "Table Manners With Jessie and Lennie Ware" podcast, Sheeran said: "Our actual wedding was a tiny, tiny event with basically no one there. We did it at night on a random day in the middle of January in the middle of nowhere. No one knew, no one came to it. We lit candles, we got married, we went back [and] had a curry." A few months later, it was reported that they threw a festival-themed party to celebrate with more friends, including Elton John and Princess Eugenie.

Sheeran made her debut in a Sheeran music video in 2019, with the release of the adorable song, "Put It All on Me", featuring Ella Mai. The video shows a number of couples dancing, including Sheeran and Seaborn who are filmed joking around in the kitchen and looking more loved-up than ever.

The couple welcomed their first baby, a daughter named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, in August 2020. The singer posted a cute photo of some baby socks and wrote, "Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here."

Less than two years after the birth of their first daughter, baby Jupiter was born. Sheeran posted a similar photo of tiny baby socks to Instagram with the caption, "Want to let you all know we've had another beautiful baby girl. We are both so in love with her, and over the moon to be a family of 4 x"

In a candid Instagram post on 1 March, Sheeran wrote about the mental health struggles he faced while writing his album. "Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly, and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air," he wrote.

He took a break from social media during this time, and started having started therapy to help with his mental state and his eating issues. Fortunately, he is now in a better place. Seaborn has also had the treatment she needed and is recovering.
