Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal's Relationship Timeline

The Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers Breakup Rumours Continue

Rumours have been swirling since December that uber cool couple, Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers have split. And while neither has officially confirmed their breakup, all signs are pointing to the speculation being true. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on 23 Feb., Mescal is asked whether he'll speak of his relationship status, to which the "Aftersun" actor replied, "Maybe at some point, but just not now. It's just difficult territory. Yeah."

The gossip mill began turning in December when Bridgers was spotted getting close to comedian Bo Burnham, according to The Daily Mail. Then came SZA's track "Ghost", which features Bridgers. While she mentions no-one specifically, the lyrics on her verse include: "You're not wrong, you're an a–hole" and "Standin' on my own".

In January, Mescal appeared on the "Off Menu" podcast and fans spotted a little insight into his mindset, too. The actor said he's always looking for something "bad" to happen to give him an excuse to start smoking. "So I'm smoking again, read into that what you will", he added. Following Mescal's Oscar nomination, there was no public congratulations on social media from Bridgers, although the notoriously private couple could have, of course, privately been in contact. In an interview with Australian Vogue, Bridgers did say she's "obviously" rooting for him. The publication originally addressed Mescal as her "former fiancé", too, before it late amended the feature. Reps for the couple did not repond to POPSUGAR's request for comment.

Whatever has gone down between the pair, there's no denying their relationship timeline has been a modern-day love story. Back in 2020, the "Punisher" singer slid into the "Normal People" star's DMs and they soon became romantically linked. There were even rumours of an engagement, but it appears this is off. Everything for Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal seemingly started in 2020, when the singer tweeted her compliments to the actor after watching "Normal People." She wrote, "finished normal people and now I'm sad and horny oh wait." Mescal replied, writing, "I'm officially dead." Bridgers responded to him, telling him he's too "talented" for that.

Soon after this, the two linked up with Wonderland magazine for a conversation on Instagram Live where Mescal said to Bridgers, "I feel like I should be interviewing you because honestly, like, I think it's well-documented that I love your music."

In July 2020, Bridgers and Mescal were seen together in Ireland by some fans and a local cafe. The cafe even tweeted about the two popping in that morning for breakfast.

At the end of 2020, Bridgers released the music video for her song "Saviour Complex." Mescal starred in it and Phoebe Waller-Bridge directed it. Bridgers wrote on Instagram at the time, "I am once again asking you to watch saviour complex starring paul & charlotte directed by phoebe waller-bridge out now everywhere."

At the LACMA Art + Film Gala in November 2021, Mescal and Bridgers showed up together for their very first red carpet appearance as a couple.

As Bridgers prepared to rock four nights in London's Brixton Academy, boyfriend Mescal was right there supporting her. She posted a cute Instagram story showcasing Mescal holding her face to showcase a slight rash on her cheek. Could this be beard rash, we wonder?

The 1975's Matty Healy sparked a social media frenzy when he tweeted that his best pal Bridgers had got engaged. "I wanna be Phoebe Bridgers. Imagine being such a lesbian icon that you just get engaged to the sexiest straight man on earth. Truly a based god". Naturally, fans went wild, responding that he had just announced the couple's engagement, seemingly without their permission. Healy was quick to backtrack, adding: "I only heard the same rumours as you don't get dramatic!! But I mean….it's gonna happen".

After Bridgers was spotted getting cosy with comedian, Bo Burnham, speculation that the couple had gone their separate ways began. While neither has explicitly confirmed the news, they have not been seen together since and a number of signs, interviews, and quotes seemingly point to the breakup being real.
