Everything for Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal seemingly started in 2020, when the singer tweeted her compliments to the actor after watching "Normal People." She wrote, "finished normal people and now I'm sad and horny oh wait." Mescal replied, writing, "I'm officially dead." Bridgers responded to him, telling him he's too "talented" for that.
Soon after this, the two linked up with Wonderland magazine for a conversation on Instagram Live where Mescal said to Bridgers, "I feel like I should be interviewing you because honestly, like, I think it's well-documented that I love your music."
