You'll remember Jessica Jones as the sardonic private investigator with superhuman strength and a troubled past. In season one, Jessica takes on the case of a missing girl named Hope Schlottman. Her client turns out to be mind-controlled by Kilgrave, the psychic villain who had sexually and mentally abused Jessica for six months. Kilgrave, throughout the season, stalks and hunts down Jessica, using her friends and clients as bait.
Jessica eventually defeats Kilgrave by snapping his neck after an epic cat-and-mouse showdown at the Ferry Hudson Terminal. She's later taken to jail and District Attorney Samantha Reyes accuses her of killing Kilgrave in cold blood. Jeri Hogarth negotiates a deal with DA, claiming that Kilgrave had forced Jessica to kill him. Jessica returns to her apartment, now a free woman with many interested in becoming her clients.
We see Jessica again in the ensemble cast of The Defenders, in which she works alongside Danny Rand, Matt Murdock, and Luke Cage to dismantle the Hand, a supervillain secret organization. At the beginning of the ensemble series, the superheroine pauses her work at Alias Investigations and resorts to drinking in order to grapple with her encounter with Kilgrave. She soon returns to work after a run-in with Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil.
